A violent clash between two groups, accompanied by gunfire, erupted late Tuesday night in Jalandhar, Punjab, leaving one youth injured and prompting a swift police response. The incident, which occurred in the Raj Nagar locality, has raised concerns about escalating inter-group tensions and the prevalence of firearms in public spaces.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the confrontation began around midnight in the Basti area of the city. Reports indicate the altercation stemmed from an old rivalry between families residing in the same lane. The dispute reportedly escalated when one group allegedly vandalized CCTV cameras installed outside the opposing group’s residence.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary police investigations suggest that the situation quickly devolved into a chaotic scene, with bricks being hurled and gunshots being fired. The sounds of gunfire caused panic among residents in the otherwise quiet neighborhood.
The injured youth is currently receiving medical attention at a private hospital. The extent of his injuries is not immediately clear, but sources confirm he sustained a gunshot wound.
Upon receiving distress calls, senior police officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) City-2 Rakesh Yadav, along with a contingent of police personnel from the Basti Bawa Khel police station, were dispatched to the scene. Law enforcement officers cordoned off the area and initiated an immediate investigation.
During their initial sweep of the location, police recovered several empty bullet shells, providing tangible evidence of the firearms used during the clash. These shell casings have been collected as crucial evidence for forensic analysis.
One woman, who claimed to be present during the incident, recounted that her family was hosting a religious gathering at their home. She stated that after dinner, as her family retired for the night, youths from a neighboring household allegedly forced their way into her home and launched an assault. She further alleged that her property’s CCTV cameras were damaged before the firing commenced, prompting her to alert the authorities.
ADCP City-2 Rakesh Yadav confirmed that the police control room received information regarding a violent altercation between two families. He stated that both parties are levelling accusations against each other. The police team has commenced questioning residents in the vicinity and is in the process of examining available CCTV footage from the lane to piece together the sequence of events. Mr. Yadav assured that appropriate legal action would be taken against those found responsible.
The incident has highlighted the persistent challenges law enforcement faces in maintaining public order and addressing disputes that can rapidly escalate into violence. The investigation is ongoing, with police focusing on identifying the individuals involved in the firing and the subsequent damages.
Authorities are also looking into the potential for a history of animosity between the involved families, which may have contributed to the nighttime confrontation. The recovery of spent bullet cartridges suggests that illegal firearms may have been used, a matter that will also be part of the comprehensive police inquiry.
The area has been under increased police surveillance since the incident to prevent any further retaliatory actions. The Basti Bawa Khel police station has registered a case and is gathering statements from all relevant parties and witnesses.
Further updates on the investigation and any arrests made are expected as authorities continue to work towards resolving the conflict and ensuring accountability.
