Pune, Maharashtra: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to construct two new flyovers on Karve Road in the Karvenagar area, aiming to significantly ease traffic congestion on this vital artery. The proposed flyovers will be situated at Karve Statue Chowk and Ambedkar Chowk, addressing long-standing traffic bottlenecks that impact commuters connecting to the Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass.
Coordinated Infrastructure Development Amidst Metro Expansion
The decision to build these new flyovers comes as Pune continues its extensive Metro rail expansion. Officials highlighted that the planning for these road infrastructure projects is crucial and needs to be coordinated with the ongoing Pune Metro work. Dinkar Gojare, in-charge of the civic Traffic Planning Department, stated that there will be limited scope for future road infrastructure projects on Karve Road once the Metro line becomes fully operational. The existing Karvenagar flyover is set to be integrated with the elevated Metro route, while the construction of the two new flyovers will be meticulously planned alongside the Metro’s development.
The proposal for a flyover at Ambedkar Chowk was initially planned by the state government in 2018, but it saw no development. The PMC’s renewed plan includes a second flyover at Karve Statue Chowk. Together, these will result in a total of three flyovers on Karve Road, spanning from Paud Phata to Warje. This comprehensive approach aims to create a more efficient traffic flow system.
Detailed Studies to Inform Project Design and Execution
To ensure the effective design and implementation of the flyovers, the PMC will conduct a detailed study. This study will involve a thorough traffic survey using automatic cameras, collecting data over seven days, including weekdays and weekends. Additional surveys will assess origin-destination patterns, traffic movement counts, speed delays, simulation modelling, traffic impact assessments, and traffic modelling. The signal timings and waiting periods on surrounding roads will also be scrutinized. The civic body will also prepare a detailed land acquisition plan, if necessary, for the project.
Furthermore, financial feasibility will be a key aspect of the study, encompassing cost estimation for land acquisition, construction, utility relocation, and maintenance. The socio-economic impact analysis will evaluate benefits such as time savings, reduced travel distance, fuel cost savings, pollution reduction, and improved mental well-being for commuters. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will also be conducted to examine effects on water resources, vegetation, wildlife, noise and air pollution, and to assess resettlement needs for affected communities.
Addressing Congestion and Enhancing Urban Mobility
Karve Road is a major arterial road in Pune, connecting key areas and experiencing significant vehicular movement. Residents and commuters have frequently voiced concerns about the persistent traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. The PMC’s initiative to develop new flyovers is a response to these concerns and a part of the broader urban mobility plan aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure. The construction of these flyovers, alongside the Metro lines, is expected to significantly improve travel times, reduce congestion-related stress, and boost overall efficiency in the city’s transportation network.
The planning and execution of such large-scale infrastructure projects require careful coordination between various civic bodies and authorities. While the exact timelines for the commencement and completion of the flyover construction are yet to be announced, the PMC’s proactive approach signifies a commitment to addressing Pune’s growing traffic challenges and improving the quality of life for its residents.
