Mumbai suburban train services on the Western Railway experienced significant disruptions on Sunday morning due to a critical overhead equipment (OHE) breakdown between Bhayandar and Naigaon stations. The failure, which occurred at approximately 7:52 AM on the Down Through line near kilometer marker 44/1-6, led to the cancellation of an estimated 15 to 20 services and delayed around 50 trains.
The incident brought train movements to a standstill for nearly five hours, causing widespread inconvenience to thousands of commuters during the busy morning rush. Initially, two local trains and one MEMU service were held up. Railway authorities dispatched a tower wagon from Vasai Road to the site to facilitate repairs and arranged for diesel power to assist in moving stranded trains.
In response to the disruption, railway officials worked to clear the affected trains. One local train and one MEMU service were successfully moved, while efforts were underway to clear the remaining Electric Multiple Unit (EMU). The restoration work on the Down Fast line between Bhayandar and Naigaon was completed by 12:47 PM, after which the first AC local from Churchgate to Virar departed at 12:52 PM, signaling a gradual return to normalcy.
The cascading effect of the OHE failure was felt across the corridor, with commuters on stretches far from the affected section reporting delays. Passengers described slower train movements and longer halts at stations, resulting in journeys extending by approximately 20 minutes for some. The lack of timely and clear announcements regarding the situation exacerbated the frustration among travelers, some of whom were stranded between stations for extended periods, disrupting their morning schedules.
While the immediate cause of the OHE failure is still under investigation, railway authorities are closely monitoring operations to ensure services stabilize throughout the afternoon. Such incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining the aging infrastructure of the Mumbai suburban railway network, which is vital for the daily commute of millions in the financial capital.
