Mobile internet services were restored in Doda district during the early hours of Monday after remaining suspended for three days following the death of a civilian in a firing incident at Jai in Bhaderwah. Broadband services, which had also been suspended, had been snapped a day after the mobile internet shutdown.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, mobile internet connectivity resumed at 2G speeds early Monday, allowing limited access to online services across the district. Mobile internet had been suspended on Friday after the firing incident, while broadband services were also shut down on Saturday as authorities imposed communication restrictions across Doda district. Authorities had earlier described the shutdown as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order following protests over the incident.
Internet restrictions were imposed after the death of Arif Hussain in a firing incident at Jai, a tourist destination in Bhaderwah subdivision of Doda district. The incident triggered protests in Bhaderwah and adjoining areas, with family members and local residents demanding a fair and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Although mobile internet services have resumed, users reported that connectivity was limited to 2G speeds, significantly affecting browsing, communication and access to online services. A speed test conducted after restoration showed download speeds of around 120 Kbps, consistent with 2G-level connectivity.
Earlier, The Chenab Times reported that Doda MLA Mehraj Malik had accused the administration of shielding those responsible for the Bhaderwah firing incident. In a public statement, Malik questioned the decision to impose internet restrictions across the district and called for an impartial investigation based on facts and the rule of law. He also alleged that the administration was protecting the accused while action was being taken against the victims.
The firing incident has drawn political attention, with opposition leaders and the victim’s family demanding accountability and a transparent inquiry. Police have maintained that the incident occurred during an operation, while the family has disputed the official version and sought an independent investigation.
