Harinder Cheema: From Rural Punjab to an Emerging Presence in Music and Entertainment

In recent years, Punjabi music has expanded well beyond regional audiences, finding listeners across South Asia and the global Punjabi diaspora. Alongside established artists, a new generation of performers is attempting to build careers that combine traditional influences with contemporary production and international exposure. Among them is Harinder Cheema, a singer from Punjab whose work reflects themes of family, memory, and social relationships while drawing on experiences gained through travel.

Born as Harinder Singh on 10 April 1999 in Kotla Dadheri, a village near Mandi Gobindgarh in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district, Cheema was raised by his parents, Pupinder Singh and Jaswinder Kaur. He completed his schooling and graduation in Punjab before pursuing opportunities that would take him beyond India.

Travel and Cultural Exposure

After completing his education, Cheema travelled to several countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and South Africa. According to the artist, these visits influenced his understanding of audiences from different cultural backgrounds and contributed to his approach to songwriting and performance.

“Every country gave me a new perspective. Travel taught me that emotions sound the same in every language. Love, pain, hope, and memories connect people everywhere. That’s what I try to bring into my songs.”

Rather than viewing travel solely as a personal experience, he describes it as an opportunity to observe different cultures and understand how music can communicate across linguistic and geographical boundaries.

Musical Career

Cheema’s recorded work centres primarily on contemporary Punjabi music. His releases explore themes such as emotional resilience, childhood memories, and family relationships.

Among his notable songs are:

  • Dilasa, which addresses themes of hope during difficult circumstances.
  • Bachpan, a song centred on childhood memories and nostalgia.
  • Dhi Ladli, which focuses on the relationship between families and daughters.

His latest release, I Phone, marks a stylistic shift toward a more contemporary and upbeat sound compared with his earlier work. The single represents an expansion of his musical catalogue as he continues to explore different styles within Punjabi music.

Expanding into Acting

In addition to music, Cheema is preparing to enter the film industry. Individuals familiar with the project say he is working toward his acting debut in a Punjabi feature film while also exploring opportunities in digital web series.

No formal announcements regarding casting, production schedules, or release dates have been made publicly. However, the planned projects indicate an effort to broaden his professional work beyond music recordings and live performances.

Continuing Connection with Punjab

Despite spending time abroad, Cheema says his creative work continues to draw inspiration from his home state. He frequently returns to Kotla Dadheri and describes rural Punjab, family life, and everyday experiences as recurring influences on his songwriting.

According to Cheema:

“No matter where I perform, my stories begin in Punjab. My village is my inspiration, my parents are my strength, and Punjabi is the language of my soul.”

His music continues to be produced primarily in Punjabi, reflecting an emphasis on retaining the language and cultural context in which his work originates.

Punjabi Music in a Global Context

The international growth of Punjabi music over the past decade has created opportunities for emerging artists to reach audiences outside India through streaming platforms, social media, live performances, and digital distribution. This expansion has enabled performers from smaller towns and rural communities to connect with listeners across multiple countries.

Cheema’s career reflects this broader trend. While continuing to produce Punjabi-language music, he has also sought to engage audiences beyond the region through travel and international exposure.

Describing his long-term objective, he says:

“To tell Punjabi stories that resonate across the world while preserving their original emotion, language, and authenticity.”

Looking Ahead

Cheema remains in the early stages of his career, with a growing catalogue of music and planned projects in film and digital entertainment. His work to date includes songs such as Dilasa, Bachpan, Dhi Ladli, and I Phone, while his forthcoming acting ventures are expected to represent the next phase of his professional development.

As Punjabi entertainment continues to expand internationally, emerging artists like Harinder Cheema illustrate how performers from rural backgrounds are using digital platforms, cross-cultural experiences, and regional storytelling to build careers that extend beyond local audiences while remaining connected to their linguistic and cultural origins.
