Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday lauded former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as an ‘Ajatshatru’—a leader without enemies—who remained steadfast in his principles throughout his political career, irrespective of his position in government or the opposition.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Shah made these remarks while addressing a public gathering in Nimbahera, Chittorgarh, following the unveiling of a statue dedicated to the former Prime Minister. He emphasized Vajpayee’s lifelong commitment to his ideology, noting that the leader spent four decades in opposition but consistently prioritized his core beliefs.
“Vajpayee went to jail, faced lathi charges and endured the atrocities of the Congress, but never compromised on his principles,” Shah stated, highlighting the resilience and conviction of the former Prime Minister.
The Home Minister recalled Vajpayee’s significant contributions as India’s first non-Congress Prime Minister. He pointed to the Pokhran nuclear tests, which, despite global pressure, solidified India’s position as a nuclear power. Shah also credited Vajpayee with initiating major infrastructure projects, including the Swarn Chaturbhuj project aimed at connecting villages with roads and expanding the national highway network.
Furthermore, Shah highlighted Vajpayee’s foresight in establishing a dedicated ministry for tribal development. He noted that prior to this initiative, no specific ministry existed to address the welfare and development needs of tribal communities across the country. The Home Minister drew a parallel between Vajpayee’s foundational work and the ongoing initiatives of the current government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the progress initiated by Vajpayee has been carried forward and amplified.
Shah also cited the election of Droupadi Murmu, who hails from a tribal background, as the President of India as a testament to the advancements made in the area of tribal welfare and representation, reflecting the spirit of inclusivity championed by Vajpayee.
The Union Home Minister reiterated that Vajpayee’s ability to maintain his principles both in power and during his time in opposition earned him the title of ‘Ajatshatru’, recognizing him as a great individual who fostered no animosity.
