Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday in Bishkek, on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. This marked the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders this year, following their previous encounter in Delhi during the 23rd Annual Summit in December 2025.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the discussions focused on reviewing the progress of bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including political, economic, defence, energy, space, mobility, and people-to-people ties. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural matters, which convened in Moscow on August 24, 2026.
During their meeting, Prime Minister Modi and President Putin exchanged views on India-Russia engagement within multilateral forums, with particular emphasis on BRICS under India’s presidency in 2026. They also shared perspectives on significant regional and global issues of mutual concern. These included the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have had repercussions on maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s stance that dialogue and diplomacy are the essential pathways to resolving international conflicts.
Both leaders agreed to maintain continuous engagement to further fortify the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. They acknowledged that this partnership continues to demonstrate substantial growth and resilience amidst prevailing geopolitical uncertainties. Prime Minister Modi conveyed his anticipation of hosting President Putin in India for the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12-13, 2026.
The engagement underscores the robust diplomatic ties between India and Russia, characterized by regular high-level interactions and a shared interest in global stability. The discussions covered a broad spectrum of bilateral cooperation, reaffirming the strategic importance of the relationship in a complex international landscape. The leaders committed to further strengthening their collaboration on issues of common interest, both bilaterally and in international forums.
