Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted on Sunday that the Narendra Modi-led government has transformed Indian politics, shifting it from an era dominated by corruption, casteism, and dynasticism to one characterized by performance.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Shah made these remarks during a press conference in Mumbai, where he announced the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan,’ a month-long campaign scheduled from September 17 to October 17. This initiative coincides with Prime Minister Modi’s birthday and marks 25 years of his tenure in public service, encompassing his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat and as Prime Minister of India.
Shah stated that prior to 2014, Indian politics was plagued by corruption, casteism, and dynastic politics. He argued that the period from 2014 onwards has seen the eradication of these issues, with the electorate now embracing a ‘politics of performance’. He further elaborated that Prime Minister Modi has steered the nation away from policy paralysis, coalition compulsions, and instances of poor decision-making.
The ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan,’ with its slogan “Jan Seva Hi Prabhu Seva” (public service is service to God), aims to foster public participation in India’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047. Shah highlighted that the past 25 years have witnessed significant and transformative changes in Gujarat and across the country, particularly in infrastructure development and poverty alleviation, indicating a fundamental shift in the political system.
He detailed that the campaign, which begins on September 17, Modi’s birthday, will be a collaborative effort involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its allies, and citizens nationwide. This year’s celebration is particularly significant as Prime Minister Modi will complete 25 years of continuous public service on October 7, a milestone he described as rare for any leader in the country.
The month-long campaign is structured around 12 major programs. These include blood donation drives, lamp-lighting ceremonies, painting and speech competitions for youth, interactions with beneficiaries of government schemes, and motorcycle rallies connecting Vadnagar, Modi’s birthplace in Gujarat, with Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency. A key objective of the campaign is to ensure the complete saturation of government welfare schemes among eligible populations.
Further initiatives under the campaign include ‘Seva Ke Rang Rashtra Ke Sang,’ which Shah described as potentially the world’s largest human-group rangoli, and a ‘Seva First Innovation Challenge’ featuring five regional innovation competitions. These events are designed to engage the public and highlight the spirit of service.
Shah also pointed to a strong ‘India First’ foreign and defence policy, asserting that India’s economy has moved from being among the ‘Fragile Five’ to ranking among the top five globally. He cited a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 7.8 per cent in the first quarter as evidence of robust economic performance. He credited reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM trinity), banking reforms, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policies, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, and ‘Make in India’ for strengthening the nation’s economic and manufacturing capabilities.
Providing data on socio-economic progress, Shah stated that 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty. He listed various welfare measures, including free food grains for 81 crore people, the establishment of 58 crore bank accounts, healthcare coverage up to Rs 5 lakh for 44 crore individuals, tap water connections for 16 crore households, annual financial assistance of Rs 6,000 under the PM-Kisan scheme for 13 crore farmers, and the construction of toilets in 13 crore households. He also mentioned the impact of schemes like Ujjwala gas connections, housing initiatives, and support for women’s self-help groups.
Significant expansion in India’s infrastructure was also highlighted, encompassing roads, railways, airports, Metros, ports, waterways, and digital networks. Shah noted the doubling of airports from approximately 75 to 150, alongside advancements in dedicated freight corridors, Vande Bharat trains, and improved border connectivity.
The Union Minister emphasized the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which mandates 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures. He also pointed to increased women’s participation in the armed forces, police, science, startups, drone technology, and sports as indicators of progress.
Addressing national security and governance, Shah stated that the government has prioritized Indian languages, adopted a firm stance against militant attacks, and resolved long-standing issues such as the abrogation of Article 370, Left-wing extremism, and security challenges in the Northeast. He cited surgical strikes, air strikes, and ‘Operation Sindoor’ as demonstrations of a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ towards militancy.
Furthermore, Shah noted the government’s efforts in developing and restoring significant sites of faith, including the Ayodhya Ram temple, Kashi Vishwanath Dham, Mahakal Lok, and the redevelopment of Kedarnath. He also referenced modern achievements such as the new Parliament building, the installation of the Sengol, the success of Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 missions, the implementation of One Rank One Pension, and the creation of the Chief of Defence Staff position.
On the international stage, Shah asserted that India’s global standing has risen considerably, citing initiatives like Vaccine Maitri, the signing of trade agreements, and India’s leadership roles in global forums such as the G20 and BRICS. He concluded by stating that the Prime Minister of India’s perspective now holds significant weight in global affairs, underscoring Modi’s unique political record as the first Prime Minister in six decades to be re-elected for a third term.
