New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated on Monday that the recent BRICS Summit, hosted by India, was a success, having forged consensus amidst a highly polarized global landscape marked by significant geopolitical divisions and conflicts.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Jaishankar, while interacting with the media, described the summit as a testament to India’s diplomatic efforts in achieving agreement on critical issues, even in the face of starkly differing national interests.
The summit, which concluded on Sunday, adopted the New Delhi Declaration, a joint statement that managed to reconcile divergent views between member states, notably the United Arab Emirates and Iran, concerning the West Asia conflict. Negotiations on the declaration’s text reportedly extended to the final moments, with both the UAE and Iran initially holding firm positions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally announced the adoption of the declaration during the opening session, attended by leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Jaishankar elaborated that the summit convened during a period of intense global polarization, characterized by two major ongoing conflicts and significant ideological divides. Despite these challenges, he emphasized that the BRICS bloc was able to achieve a consensus. He highlighted the West Asia conflict as the most contentious issue, yet underscored the successful adoption of a statement that garnered agreement from all participants.
The agreed-upon statement, according to Jaishankar, called for peace, security, stability, long-term understanding, the unimpeded flow of global trade, supply chains, and energy, while also advocating for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. He noted that the summit’s atmosphere facilitated open and comfortable dialogue, allowing leaders to engage in conversations that might not have occurred under different circumstances, thereby contributing significantly to global discourse on pressing matters.
The summit provided a platform for numerous bilateral meetings on its sidelines, held at the Bharat Mandapam complex. Strategic affairs analysts pointed to the bilateral meeting between the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Iranian President as particularly significant, especially considering the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The participation of 32 delegations, including heads of state and government from BRICS member states, partner countries, regional bodies, and international organizations, demonstrated India’s substantial convening power under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Jaishankar observed.
He further noted the strong personal rapport that many attending leaders shared with Prime Minister Modi, as evidenced by the event’s coverage. The summit’s agenda primarily focused on economic development and technology for the Global South, carrying a strong message of support for developing nations. The two main themes discussed were reform and resilience, which Jaishankar described as unifying subjects that fostered collaboration among member nations, contributing to the overall consensus.
A notable point of agreement was the bloc’s stance on terrorism. The BRICS members unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, explicitly recognizing the unacceptability of the Pahalgam attack that occurred in April 2025. They reaffirmed a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, including cross-border terrorism, and rejected double standards in its counteraction. Jaishankar concluded by stating that Prime Minister Modi’s message of dialogue, diplomacy, and development resonated globally, underscoring the successful realization of the summit in New Delhi despite prior skepticism about its feasibility.
