Himachal Pradesh: Four-time Rampur MLA Nand Lal Dies at 72

Nand Lal, a four-time Congress MLA from the Rampur Assembly constituency in Himachal Pradesh, passed away on Monday morning at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities in Chamiyana. He was 72 years old and had been suffering from a prolonged illness.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Nand Lal was also serving as the chairman of the Himachal Pradesh State Finance Commission at the time of his passing.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed his condolences, stating that Nand Lal was deeply committed to the Congress party and had consistently upheld his ideals throughout his political career. The Chief Minister’s office released a statement acknowledging the significant contribution of the late MLA to the state and his constituency.

Born on April 16, 1954, in Deothi village of Rampur Bushahr, Nand Lal pursued higher education and completed his postgraduation in Political Science from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Following his academic pursuits, he joined the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), where he served with distinction. During his tenure with the ITBP, he commanded a battalion in Jammu and Kashmir and also served in the elite Special Protection Group (SPG), which is responsible for the security of the Prime Minister and other VVIPs.

After taking voluntary retirement from service in 2007, Nand Lal ventured into electoral politics. He contested the Assembly elections from the Rampur constituency on a Congress ticket and secured victory in four consecutive elections held in 2007, 2012, 2017, and 2022. His consistent electoral success underscored his strong connection with the electorate of Rampur.

Nand Lal is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchild. His death marks the end of a significant political career that spanned over a decade and a half in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

The Rampur constituency, located in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, has been a stronghold for the Congress party, and Nand Lal was a prominent figure within the party in the region. His political journey began after a distinguished career in central security forces, highlighting a transition from service to public life. His contributions to the state’s development and his role in the state finance commission were noted aspects of his public service.

The passing of veteran legislators like Nand Lal often prompts reflections on their contributions to state politics and their impact on the constituencies they represented. The political landscape of Himachal Pradesh will feel the absence of experienced leaders who have a deep understanding of local issues and have served the people for multiple terms. The Himachal Pradesh government and the Congress party have acknowledged the void left by his demise.

The Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities, where he breathed his last, is a prominent healthcare facility in the region, often serving as a referral centre for complex medical cases. His prolonged illness necessitated extended treatment, indicating the severity of his health condition in the months leading up to his death.

The political fraternity of Himachal Pradesh has been mourning his loss, with several leaders from various parties acknowledging his service to the state. His legacy is expected to be remembered through the development initiatives he championed and his role in shaping policies during his tenure as an MLA and as chairman of the State Finance Commission. The focus now shifts to the selection of a successor to represent the Rampur constituency in the state assembly.

The Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh are held periodically to elect representatives for the 68-member legislative assembly. Nand Lal’s consistent wins demonstrated his popularity and the trust placed in him by the voters of Rampur. His political career is often cited as an example of a successful transition from a career in central government service to active participation in state-level politics.

The Himachal Pradesh State Finance Commission plays a crucial role in recommending the distribution of financial resources between the state and its local governments, as well as advising on matters related to the state’s fiscal health. Nand Lal’s leadership in this commission was a significant part of his later political career, contributing to the state’s economic planning and fiscal management.

The political discourse in Himachal Pradesh often revolves around development, governance, and representation. Nand Lal, as a long-serving MLA, was a key participant in these discussions, advocating for the interests of his constituency and contributing to legislative debates. His passing is a significant event in the state’s political calendar, marking the end of an era for the Rampur Assembly seat and the Congress party in the region.

His family’s privacy is expected to be respected during this period of mourning. Funeral arrangements, if any, would typically be announced by the family or the political party, adhering to customary practices for departed leaders. The prolonged illness suggests a challenging period for the family leading up to his demise.
