Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of Web Answer on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, a new feature designed to significantly simplify how AI agents retrieve and present information from the internet. This development aims to eliminate the need for developers to build complex search, retrieval, synthesis, and citation pipelines themselves, offering a streamlined solution for agents that require access to current web data.
The Chenab Times has learned that Web Answer collapses the entire process of querying the web into a single tool call. Instead of manually orchestrating API calls, filtering search results, cleaning retrieved content, prompting models for synthesis, and engineering citation extraction, developers can now send a natural-language question and receive a synthesized, source-cited answer within seconds.
Streamlining Web Information Retrieval
Previously, developers building agents to answer questions from current web sources faced a multi-step process. This typically involved calling a search API, selecting reliable results, retrieving and cleaning page content, prompting a language model to synthesize the information, and then implementing citation extraction to ensure the output could be traced back to its origin. Each of these steps required custom code maintenance and presented potential failure points, such as AI hallucination due to insufficient evidence, stale content, or broken attribution.
Web Answer addresses these challenges by acting as a managed connector within Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. When an agent sends a question to its AgentCore Gateway, the Gateway authenticates the request and invokes Web Answer. This managed connector then plans and executes multiple web searches in parallel, verifies facts on key pages, and constructs an answer that meticulously links each claim to its source URL. The synthesized answer and its citations are then returned to the agent as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool result.
Key features of Web Answer include:
- A grounded, cited answer where each piece of information is traceable to a source URL.
- Access to current information, as Web Answer performs new searches for every query and its model considers the current date for up-to-date results.
- Agentic search capabilities, allowing Web Answer to plan its own searches, run them concurrently, verify facts, and determine when sufficient evidence has been gathered.
- Built-in responsible AI safeguards.
Distinguishing Web Answer from Web Search
While both Web Answer and the existing Web Search tools on AgentCore support retrieval use cases, they differ in their level of integration and control. The Web Search tool returns ranked URLs, titles, and snippets, leaving the synthesis and control of the model to the developer. This is ideal for scenarios where developers require full control over the processing of search results.
In contrast, Web Answer handles the model execution, agentic retrieval loop, synthesis, and attribution. This results in a complete, cited answer being delivered directly to the agent. Web Answer is particularly beneficial when the question is a sub-task within a larger agent, and the developer does not want to manage a dedicated retrieval pipeline.
Many customers are expected to utilize both tools, employing Web Search for broad research tasks requiring raw results and Web Answer for specific factual questions demanding a quick, cited response.
Implementation and Enterprise Controls
Setting up and invoking Web Answer is designed to be straightforward. Developers grant the AgentCore Gateway’s service role permission to call Web Answer and then add Web Answer as a target. The tool is then discoverable by agents attached to the Gateway via MCP.
Web Answer integrates with existing enterprise controls, including Gateway authentication, VPC and AWS PrivateLink support for traffic security, zero data egress to ensure queries and results remain within the AWS environment, and Amazon CloudWatch metrics for operational monitoring. It also features per-account rate limits, administrative policy bounds for domain filtering, and ensures queries remain within the AWS ecosystem by searching an Amazon-operated web index and knowledge graph without sending questions to third-party search engines.
Use cases for Web Answer span various industries, including financial services for regulatory Q&A, healthcare for clinical support grounded in medical literature, customer service for real-time product policy answers, legal and compliance for research with auditable citations, and internal enterprise copilots for knowledge workers.
Availability and Pricing
Web Answer is currently available in US East (N. Virginia) (us-east-1), with plans for expansion to additional AWS Regions. The service is priced at $10 per 1,000 tool calls.
