Farmers and workers affiliated with the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha launched a statewide agitation on Monday, converging outside the residence of Punjab Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO in Amritsar. The demonstration saw participants come equipped with provisions for community kitchens, milk, and other essentials, signalling a prolonged engagement.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that prominent leaders of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, including Satnam Singh Manochahal and Baba Gurbachan Singh Chabba, were present among the protesting group. Their collective demands centre on the Punjab government ensuring the procurement of key crops—basmati, maize, moong, mustard, and potatoes—at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). They are also pressing for government arrangements to facilitate this procurement process.
Beyond agricultural produce, the protesters articulated a series of critical concerns for the farming community. A central demand is the complete waiver of farmers’ debts. Furthermore, they are seeking compensation for families who have lost members to suicide, along with a government job for one member from each bereaved family, highlighting the socio-economic distress within the agricultural sector.
The demonstration also brought to the fore environmental and resource-related issues plaguing Punjab. Protesters raised alarms regarding the impact of floods, the alarming decline in groundwater levels, and the escalating air and water pollution across the state. They asserted the need for river water sharing to be determined based on the riparian principle, indicating concerns about water rights and management.
Additional demands presented by the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha include the withdrawal of the controversial Land Pooling Policy, which has been a point of contention among landholders. They also called for the retraction of all cases registered against farmers and workers during past agitations, including those related to stubble burning.
