The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a sharp critique against former Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh following his recent switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The AAP has dismissed Singh’s claims of achieving 90 per cent of his development targets as legislator, accusing him of opportunism and questioning his recent statements regarding the safety of Punjabis.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Karamjit Singh Rintu, AAP’s North halqa in-charge, directly addressed Singh’s assertions. Rintu stated that since assuming office in July 2025, his focus has been on clearing backlogs, particularly highlighting the extensive work undertaken to resolve choked sewer networks within the constituency. He asserted that 97 per cent of this crucial work has been completed.
Further detailing the development initiatives, Rintu claimed that 150 metalled roads have been recarpeted. The specific stretches mentioned include the road connecting Trilium Mall with Kachehri Road, Medical Enclave, Green Avenue, Tagore Avenue, and 88 Feet Road. Additionally, roads within the jurisdiction of the Baba Deep Singh panchayat, Naushehra Kalan, and Naushehra Khurd have reportedly been repaired.
The AAP leader also took aim at Singh’s pronouncements that “Punjabis are in danger.” Rintu questioned the sincerity of such statements from an individual he described as a “non-Punjabi,” implying opportunism in the timing and context of these remarks. He further drew a parallel to statements made by Singh during the time of the Bargari sacrilege incident, questioning whether Singh would now seek justice with the BJP’s support, which he alleged has provided “convenient paroles” to Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
Raj Kanwal Preet Pal Singh Lucky, a four-time Congress councillor from the North constituency, echoed sentiments of dissatisfaction regarding local development. He commented that the constituency has allegedly not witnessed significant development over the past four and a half years. Lucky expressed surprise at the timing of the sudden initiation of various works by the government, especially with the 2027 Assembly elections on the horizon, suggesting a politically motivated acceleration of projects.
Countering the opposition’s claims, APS Chatha, an associate of Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, defended the former MLA’s tenure. Chatha refuted the accusations, asserting that Singh had largely completed all planned development works before his suspension by the Aam Aadmi Party. He indicated that a comprehensive list of these completed works is extensive.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh was suspended by the Aam Aadmi Party on June 29, 2025, for a period of five years, citing alleged anti-party activities as the reason for the disciplinary action. The political discourse surrounding Singh’s defection and his past performance continues to be a focal point in Amritsar’s political landscape.
