CHANDIGARH: The post-mortem examination of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, who was shot dead in Mansa on October 13, was conducted 25 days later at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh on Saturday afternoon.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the body has been kept at the PGIMER mortuary. Members of the action committee confirmed that the family had intended to take the body to Mansa on Sunday morning for cremation. Any potential changes to this schedule were to be announced accordingly.
Earlier, the family had announced that the cremation would take place on Saturday. However, due to the delay in the post-mortem procedure, the action committee had appealed to the public to postpone their attendance until a fresh announcement regarding the cremation timetable was made.
Parvinder Singh Jhota was killed on October 13 after an altercation at a chemist shop in Mansa. The confrontation reportedly stemmed from an alleged sale of addictive drugs. The firing incident also resulted in injuries to four of his companions.
Following the incident, Jhota’s body remained at the Mansa Civil Hospital mortuary for an extended period. This was due to a protracted standoff between Jhota’s family and the state government concerning their demands. These demands included action against certain officials and the cancellation of cases registered against protesters.
The agreement to allow the body to be transferred to PGIMER for the post-mortem was reached late Thursday night, paving the way for the examination to be conducted on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Jhota’s father, Bhim Singh, who accompanied the body to Chandigarh, has reportedly commenced an indefinite fast. His fast is reportedly aimed at seeking the transfer of Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Chaudhary. Reports indicated that Bhim Singh’s health had deteriorated on Saturday while in Chandigarh.
Jhota’s mother, wife, and children remained in Mansa. The district administration and the action committee had made arrangements for the cremation at Jhota’s fields, located on Chakerian Road in Mansa.
