India warns UK of reciprocal steps over new quarantine rules

[ad_1]

“Reciprocal measures” may be taken by India “Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Tuesday that the UK’s policy of requiring visiting Indian nationals to undergo mandatory quarantine even if they are fully vaccinated with the Covishield vaccine will be changed.

It is being referred to as a “discriminatory policy.” “According to Shringla, the laws will have an impact on Indians who desire to travel to the United Kingdom. Last Monday, the new guidelines were published, and they will go into force in October.

Even if they are fully vaccinated with Covishield, which is produced under licence by Serum Instituteof India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine maker, and is a version of the vaccine developed in the UK by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, the rules require Indians visiting the UK to quarantine themselves for 10 days and undergo covid-19 tests. India is enraged by the United Kingdom’s choice.

According to news reports, pandemic restrictions in the United Kingdom and Scotland would be eased beginning in early October. India, on the other hand, is not on the list of countries possessing vaccines that have been approved.

“This is a vaccine called Covishield, which is a licenced product of a UK firm that is made in India, and we have delivered 5 million doses to the UK government at their request. We realise that this is used in the national health system, and hence Covishield’s non-recognition is a discriminatory policy “At a news conference, Shringla stated.

Meanwhile, foreign minister S. Jaishankar met with his British counterpart Liz Truss on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, according to Shringla. Jaishankar is in the United States ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

“I’ve been told that assurances have been offered that this problem will be resolved “The talks between Jaishankar and Truss, according to Shringla.

“We have also offered some of our partner countries the option of mutual recognition of vaccine certification. However, these are reciprocal measures. I think if obviously as we go along we have to see how it goes but if we don’t get satisfaction, we would be within our rights to impose reciprocal measures,” Shringla said.

Covishield has been given to a huge number of people in India. Others have got doses of Covaxin, an indigenously created vaccine produced by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech and currently seeking World Health Organization approval.

Following a severe second wave of the epidemic, India could resume exports and gifts of surplus covid-19 vaccinations in October, according to Union health and family welfare minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Meanwhile, the United States has stated that it will accept “fully vaccinated” people “According to a report in the New York Times, travellers began arriving in November. International travel was “critical to linking families and friends, to fueling small and major enterprises, and to fostering the open exchange of ideas and culture,” according to Jeff Zients, the White House pandemic coordinator, quoted in the paper “..

It’s “good news” that the US has relaxed travel restrictions for Indian students and professionals “Shringla stated.
