[ad_1]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Washington today for a three-day visit, during which he will attend the first-ever Quad Summit between the United States, Australia, and Japan in person. He’ll also meet with President Joe Biden for the first time.

Here are the top 10 points in this developing story:

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also speak at the United Nations General Assembly, despite his busy itinerary. He was greeted warmly by a gathering of Indian Americans who sang his name and waved the Indian flag as he arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Washington, DC, under light rain. Despite the early morning rain, a large crowd of Indian Americans had assembled to greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  2. PM Modi was received at the airport by senior officials of the Biden Administration and India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu. “Grateful to the Indian community in Washington DC for the warm welcome. Our diaspora is our strength. It is commendable how the Indian diaspora has distinguished itself across the world,” PM Modi tweeted.
  3. The PM, who is visiting the United States for the seventh time since taking office in 2014, described the trip as a “opportunity to expand our strategic cooperation with the United States and consolidate connections with Japan and Australia.” He further stated that he would examine the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and exchange views on regional and global topics of common concern with President Biden before leaving India.
  4. On the Quad Summit, PM Modi stated that his meeting with President Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga would allow him to “take stock of the outcomes of a virtual summit in March” and “identify priorities for future engagements based on our shared vision for the Indo-Pacific region.”
  5. The Afghan crisis and its implications, China’s growing assertiveness, strategies to combat radicalism and cross-border terrorism, and the growth of India-US global partnership are set to be at the forefront of PM Modi and President Biden’s meeting on September 24 in Washington.
  6. The PM is accompanied by a high-level team that includes External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on his first visit outside of the country since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
  7. A meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris, who has Indian ancestors, is also planned. PM Modi said he was “looking forward” to his first meeting with her and that he was “looking forward” to exploring potential for cooperation, particularly in the field of science and technology. They had previously conversed on the phone in June.
  8. The Prime Minister will also meet with key executives from Qualcomm, Adobe, Blackstone, General Atomics, and First Solar in Washington, according to news agency ANI.
  9. On September 24, the Prime Minister will go to New York and deliver a speech to the United Nations General Assembly the next day. His address will focus on global issues like as the COVID-19 epidemic, the need to battle terrorism, climate change, and other pressing concerns.
  10. PM Modi last visited the United States in September of this year, when he and then-US President Donald Trump spoke at the ‘Howdy Modi’ event in Houston.
