Russian missiles struck Kyiv, causing at least 8 deaths and 24 injuries, a Ukrainian official said BNO News.
Early on Monday, a number of powerful explosions shook the Ukrainian city of Kyiv. After the sound of approaching missiles, large explosions have reportedly been heard in Kiev, according to AP. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
According to Reuters, explosions were also reported in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro and in the western Ukrainian cities of Lviv, Ternopil, and Zhytomyr.
There are dead and injured persons, the Emergency Service spokesperson in Kyiv told the AP. Currently, rescuers are operating in various sites, according to Svitlana Vodolaga.
Up to four explosions were heard throughout the city this morning, and smoke was reportedly visible rising from one location in the middle, according to The Kyiv Independent.
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed the news on Telegram, stating that numerous explosions had shaken the Ukrainian city and that emergency personnel were on the scene. According to accounts, air raid sirens sounded throughout Kyiv more than an hour prior to the explosions, which occurred at 8:15 am.
The strikes were referred to as “its barrage of attacks on Ukrainian civilians” by the US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget A. Brink.
“Several explosions in the Shevchenkivskyi district- in the centre of the capital,” Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said on social media.
The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, added that Russia is “trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the Earth” and noted that there have been casualties in missile assaults across Ukraine.
After an explosion on October 8 partially collapsed a bridge connecting the Crimean Peninsula with Russia, killing three persons, the assault on Kyiv and other cities followed.
