Amritpal Singh, a prominent Khalistani separatist who had been on the run since March 18, has surrendered before the Moga Police in Punjab. According to sources, he will be shifted to the Dibrugarh jail in Assam, where eight of his aides, including Papalpreet Singh, are already being held under the National Security Act.
Singh had given a sermon at a gurdwara in Rode village of Moga district before surrendering. Jasveer Singh Rode, the nephew of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale, had helped facilitate Singh’s surrender. Singh had surrendered in Rode, the native village of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed in Operation Blue Star.
Singh had informed the police about his presence at the gurdwara after reaching it on Saturday evening. “He himself informed the police about his presence and that he would surrender this morning at 7 am,” said Singh Sahib Giani Jasveer Singh Rode.
The Punjab Police had already invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against Amritpal Singh, who is a known follower of the Khalistani separatist and terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. He had rebranded himself as “Bhindranwale 2.0” among his supporters.
On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was asked about Amritpal Singh at India Today Karnataka Roundtable 2023. The home minister had said, “It may happen sometime. Earlier he used to roam freely, but now he cannot carry on with his activities.”
Police had launched a crackdown on Amritpal Singh and members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’ on March 18 after his supporters had stormed Ajnala police station. Singh’s surrender is being seen as a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb Khalistani separatist activities in the country.
