In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, a video surfaced showing two women from the Kuki-Zomi community being paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a mob of men in Manipur. The victims, one in her 20s and the other in her 40s, have now come forward with a gut-wrenching account of the ordeal, alleging that they were “left to the mob by the police.”
The incident occurred in the Kangpokpi district, where the victims’ village was attacked by the mob. According to the police complaint filed on May 18, the younger woman was brutally gang-raped in broad daylight. Shockingly, the victims claimed that the police were present with the mob during the attack and that they were handed over to the assailants by the very officers who were meant to protect them, as reported by The Indian Express.
Speaking over the phone from her husband’s home, the younger victim revealed to The Indian Express, “The police were there with the mob which was attacking our village. The police picked us up from near home, and took us a little away from the village and left us on the road with the mob. We were given to them by police.”
The horrifying incident unfolded when the victims sought refuge in a forest after their village was attacked. They were later rescued by Thoubal police and were on their way to the police station when they were stopped by the mob, seized from police custody, and subjected to unimaginable horrors.
According to their complaint, there were five of them together during the attack, including the two women seen in the distressing video. Another woman in her 50s was also allegedly stripped, and tragically, the father and brother of the younger victim were killed by the violent mob.
“We were just left there and we escaped,” the survivor shared, highlighting the harrowing aftermath of the assault.
The incident came to light when a video capturing the brutality started circulating, prompting nationwide outrage and demanding immediate action from the state government and law enforcement agencies. Despite the victims filing an FIR two months ago, the arrest of one perpetrator was only confirmed after the video’s circulation gained attention.
The police have arrested one individual in connection with the incident, and an ongoing operation is underway to apprehend the rest of the perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime.
While the video continues to spark outrage and condemnation, it has also exposed the vulnerability of women in remote areas like Manipur. The survivors expressed that they were not even aware of the existence of the video due to the lack of internet accessibility in their region.
