In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a 26-year-old man in Delhi lost his life after being brutally assaulted on suspicion of stealing “prasad” (religious offerings) from a Ganpati stall. The victim, Isar Mohammad, was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals who had set up the stall. Isar’s family claimed that he was mentally challenged, and they blame the residents, purportedly Hindus, for not intervening to rescue him, Indian Express reported.
According to the Delhi Police, six individuals have been arrested in connection with Isar Mohammad’s murder. Those taken into custody include Kamal (23), his brother Manoj (19), his employee Yunus (20), Kishan (19), a laborer, Pappu (24), a factory worker, and Lucky, who operates a momo stall. Additionally, a minor, aged 17, has been apprehended.
The gruesome incident unfolded when the accused individuals alleged that they had found Isar lurking in the area around 5 a.m. They suspected him of theft and, unable to receive coherent responses from him due to his mental condition, they resorted to violence. Isar was tied to an electric pole and subjected to a sustained assault.
DCP (Northeast) Joy N Tirkey stated, “The accused claimed that around 5 a.m., they caught Isar lurking around the area and thought that he was a thief. They asked him questions but he was unable to reply properly since he was mentally challenged. They then tied him to an electric pole and thrashed him.”
A senior police officer revealed that the post-mortem report indicated blunt force injuries all over Isar’s body, including his head, back, arms, and legs. The cause of death has been attributed to “shock and hemorrhage.”
Disturbingly, the accused recorded a video of the incident, depicting two men beating Isar with sticks while others verbally abused him. One individual was seen kicking the victim’s head before fleeing the scene. Isar remained injured for nearly six hours before being discovered and transported home, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Isar’s family vehemently denied the allegations of theft, asserting that he had picked up some food because he was hungry. They described him as an individual who worked odd jobs to support his family. Isar is survived by his father and four sisters.
The tragic incident occurred approximately 400 meters from Isar’s home, where he encountered a platform with prasad and food items. A group of 5-6 locals surrounded him, accusing him of theft and subsequently assaulting him before tying him to a pole.
Isar’s father, Abdul Wajid (60), expressed his anguish over the ordeal his son endured, saying, “My son never did anything wrong. He told me how he was thrashed. They picked up stones, bricks, sticks… they even tried to pull his nails. After untying him from the pole, they took him to other places in the area and beat him. I didn’t know what to do when I saw him. His sisters also didn’t know anything.”
Paramilitary forces have been deployed in and around the victim’s house and the incident site to maintain peace. Both the family and the police have refuted claims that Isar was carrying any weapon.
