Hazrat Khadija (RA), the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), played a pivotal role in the early years of Islam. Her life and death are intricately linked to the foundation of the Muslim faith.
A Life of Strength and Success
Born in the 6th century CE in Mecca, Khadija (RA) hailed from the prominent Quraysh tribe. She defied societal norms, establishing herself as a successful businesswoman known for her integrity and shrewdness. Her reputation earned her the moniker “al-Tahira” (the Pure One).
Recognizing Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) honesty and trustworthiness, she entrusted him with managing her trade caravans. This professional collaboration blossomed into a marriage that transcended a mere partnership.
Khadija (RA) and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were married for 25 years. Their union was one of mutual respect, love, and support. Khadija (RA) was the first to embrace Islam when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation. She provided him with emotional and financial solace during the challenging years that followed. Her wealth not only allowed the Prophet (PBUH) to fully dedicate himself to his mission but also supported the fledgling Muslim community.
A Loss that Marked a Year of Sorrow
Khadija (RA) passed away in 619 CE, during the 10th of Ramadan. This year also witnessed the death of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) beloved uncle, Abu Talib. The profound loss of these two pillars of his life led the Prophet (PBUH) to refer to it as the “Year of Sorrow” (Aam ul-Huzn).
Hazrat Khadija’s (RA) death undoubtedly left a void in Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) life. However, her legacy continues to inspire generations of Muslims. Her faith, intelligence, and support for the Prophet (PBUH) serve as a powerful message to the role women played in the early days of Islam. She is remembered as a pillar of strength, a devoted wife, and a true believer who stood by the Prophet (PBUH) during his most challenging times.
