Five Doctors Suspended, Two Senior Doctors Issued Notices Over Death of Pregnant Woman in Rajouri

Five doctors have been suspended, and two senior doctors have been issued show-cause notices at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Rajouri following the sudden death of a five-month pregnant woman, officials said.

Razim Akhter, 35, a resident of Badhaal Kotranka, died at GMC Rajouri on Sunday afternoon after being admitted with complications during her pregnancy. She was initially treated at a hospital in Kandi before being referred to GMC Rajouri for specialized care, the news ageny Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

“In this case, we have suspended five doctors and asked for an explanation from two senior doctors. In such cases, where the attendants themselves are alleging negligence, I understand that we may have been at fault somewhere as well,” Dr. Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, Principal of GMC Rajouri, told news agency ANI.

According to Bhatia, the deceased died due to pulmonary embolism following urinary retention and pregnancy-related complications. The doctor on duty had catheterized her on arrival, and she appeared stable until her condition suddenly deteriorated the following morning after breakfast.

“Yesterday on social media, I saw a post where a man (the patient’s attendant) alleged that his patient was not given proper treatment at GMC Rajouri. Taking cognizance of the matter, we formed a team of doctors from different departments to investigate. If any negligence is confirmed, appropriate action will be taken,” Bhatia added, as reported by ANI.

The suspended doctors have been identified as Dr. Veenu Bharti and Dr. Neetu from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Dr. Shakir Ahmed Parray, Dr. Shafkat Ulla, and Dr. Anif Saleem Rather from the Department of Casualty, officials told PTI. These doctors were on night duty in the Emergency Ward when Akhter was under treatment.

Additionally, show-cause notices were issued to a senior doctor from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, another from the Department of Surgery, and eight other staff members, including paramedics and support staff. They have been directed to submit explanations to the Principal regarding the alleged negligence, PTI reported.

The investigation into Akhter’s death was initiated after a social media post by a relative of the deceased alleged improper treatment at GMC Rajouri. Officials said the case is under review, and the hospital is awaiting detailed reports to determine the circumstances leading to her death.
