New Delhi, September 2 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s robust economic performance, achieving a 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter, despite global economic challenges, during his address at the Semicon India 2025 conference in Delhi on Tuesday.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Modi highlighted that India’s economy outperformed expectations, growing by 7.8% year-on-year in the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial year, up from 7.4% in the previous quarter. “At a time when there are concerns in the economy of the world, there are challenges created by economic selfishness; in that environment, India has achieved a growth of 7.8 per cent,” Modi said, as reported by ANI. This growth marks the highest in five quarters, occurring before the imposition of new U.S. tariffs on Indian goods.
The Prime Minister’s remarks appeared to reference the 50% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Indian exports, which include a 25% tariff on Indian imports and an additional 25% penalty due to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. India has called these tariffs “unjustified,” according to information available with The Chenab Times.
At the Semicon India 2025 conference, Modi was presented with the first made-in-India semiconductor chips, signaling progress in the country’s push toward self-reliance in technology. “The world trusts India. The world believes in India. The world is ready to build the semiconductor future with India,” Modi stated, as per ANI.
The Indian government has maintained its stance against external pressures, particularly regarding its energy imports from Russia, which the U.S. has cited as a reason for the additional tariffs. No further statements from U.S. officials were available at the time of reporting.
