Jammu and Kashmir State Election Commission Begins Panchayat Electoral Roll Revision

JAMMU: The State Election Commission of Jammu and Kashmir has initiated the annual revision of the Panchayat Electoral Roll, setting April 1, 2026, as the qualifying date for inclusion of names. This process is crucial for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of voter lists for upcoming local body elections in the Union Territory.

The Chenab Times has learned that the revision is being undertaken in accordance with Sub Rule 4 of Rule 4 of the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Rules, 1996. The preparation of the electoral roll will adhere to the provisions outlined in the J&K Panchayati Raj Act of 1989 and the procedural guidelines established by the Election Authority. The process will build upon the last updated electoral roll, using existing entries as the foundation for the new draft.

Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) are scheduled to publish the last updated integrated electoral roll for each Halqa Panchayat on March 27, 2026. This publication will be accompanied by a notice in Form PER-1, as mandated by election regulations. The draft Panchayat Electoral Roll for 2026 will subsequently be open for revision, allowing eligible voters to submit claims for additions, deletions, corrections, and transpositions.

The period for submitting these claims and objections will commence on March 27, 2026, and conclude on April 29, 2026. To facilitate this extensive undertaking, special camps are being organized at various polling booth locations across the Union Territory. These camps will be held on April 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26, 2026. During these sessions, Panchayat Election Booth Officials (PEBOs) and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will be available to assist voters. They will have the necessary forms and the draft electoral rolls on hand to address queries and process applications.

Voters seeking assistance or clarification can contact their respective District Panchayat Election Officers (DPEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and Panchayat Election Booth Officials (PEBOs). Contact details for these officials are accessible through the offices of the concerned DPEOs and are also available on the official website of the State Election Commission, secjk.nic.in. The Election Commission has emphasized the importance of voter participation in this revision process to ensure that the electoral roll accurately reflects the eligible electorate.

Following the period for claims and objections, the EROs will be responsible for the disposal of all submitted claims. This crucial phase is slated to conclude by May 8, 2026. Subsequently, the final Panchayat Electoral Roll for 2026 will be published on May 15, 2026, marking the completion of the revision exercise. This updated roll will serve as the basis for future Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
