NEW DELHI: In a significant breakthrough, the Delhi Police have arrested a member of the notorious Rohit Choudhary gang after a prolonged search spanning over a year. The accused, identified as Azam, was apprehended in Tapukara, Rajasthan, following a meticulous operation involving technical surveillance and intelligence gathering.
Months-Long Pursuit Culminates in Rajasthan Arrest
The arrest marks the end of an extensive manhunt for Azam, who had been declared a proclaimed offender. He was wanted in connection with five criminal cases, including charges of robbery, assault on police personnel, obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties, and theft. The operation to track down Azam involved sophisticated methods, including the analysis of call detail records and internet protocol detail records, which ultimately led investigators to his hideout in Rajasthan.
According to police officials, Azam is a ‘Bad Character’ from the Fatehpur Beri police station in South Delhi and a resident of Chandan Hola. His apprehension took place during an overnight operation where police had tracked his movements across Alwar, Tijara, and Bhiwadi in Rajasthan. The police team successfully laid a trap near a hospital where Azam was spotted on a rooftop. Upon noticing the police, he reportedly attempted to evade capture by jumping across adjacent rooftops before being pursued and overpowered after a brief chase.
Gang Involvement and Criminal History
During interrogation, Azam revealed that his association with the Rohit Choudhary gang began while he was incarcerated. He first came into contact with gang members in jail following his arrest in a carjacking case in 2017. After his release in 2022, Azam allegedly became actively involved in the gang’s criminal activities, including an extortion case. He is reported to have facilitated the supply of illegal arms to gang members and other criminals, contributing to the gang’s operations.
Azam’s criminal record dates back to 2012, with numerous cases registered against him in Delhi for theft, robbery, assault, and violations of the Arms Act. He had been absconding since he secured bail in a 2017 robbery case registered at the Fatehpur Beri police station. A particularly audacious escape occurred in September 2025, when Azam allegedly attacked a police team and escaped from their custody along with his family members while officers were attempting to execute a non-bailable warrant. This incident resulted in injuries to several police personnel and damage to an Emergency Response Vehicle.
Rohit Choudhary Gang’s Operations
The Rohit Choudhary gang has been a significant concern for law enforcement agencies in Delhi and surrounding regions. The gang’s activities have been linked to various serious crimes, including murder, extortion, and illegal arms trafficking. Several members and associates of the gang have been apprehended in various operations conducted by the Delhi Police over the past few years.
In March 2026, the Delhi Police arrested another member of the Rohit Choudhary gang, Pardeep Gulati, recovering four firearms and 22 live cartridges from his possession. Gulati was allegedly storing weapons for the gang to be used in extortion and violent offenses. Further investigations revealed that Gulati was an associate of Arvind Gupta, an active member of the gang. In another operation in May 2026, the Crime Branch arrested Praveen Kumar alias Tittu, a close associate of Rohit Chaudhary, who was allegedly involved in a transnational arms trafficking network linked to a Bangladesh-based arms dealer and potentially ISI handlers.
Earlier in August 2026, a proclaimed offender, Rahul Rawat, allegedly linked to the Rohit Choudhary gang and wanted in an attempt-to-murder case inside Tihar Jail, was arrested from Udaipur after a 700-kilometer interstate pursuit. Rawat had been evading arrest and was declared a proclaimed offender in multiple cases. The Delhi Police have consistently worked to dismantle the network of gangsters operating in the capital, with the Rohit Choudhary gang being a frequent focus due to its involvement in organized crime and violence.
