Ladakh has significantly bolstered its winter sports infrastructure with the inauguration of its first international-level artificial ice hockey rink at the NDS Stadium in Leh. The state-of-the-art facility, costing approximately Rs 42 crore, aims to provide year-round training opportunities for ice hockey players in the Union Territory.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the facility was inaugurated on Thursday by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. He described the rink as a crucial investment in the future of Ladakh’s young athletes, enhancing the region’s capacity for developing and competing in winter sports.
The new rink is equipped with a 24/7 chilling system, a feature that addresses a long-standing challenge for ice hockey in Ladakh. Previously, players were limited to a natural ice season lasting only two to three months annually. This short period constrained training duration, tournament scheduling, and systematic preparation for competitions.
With the availability of artificial ice year-round, players can now expect greater consistency in their training regimens. This continuous practice is expected to lead to improved performance and better preparation for both national and international sporting events. Lieutenant Governor Saxena highlighted the rink’s role in aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to establish India as a global sporting powerhouse by expanding access to quality sports infrastructure, particularly in remote and border regions.
“This 24/7 chilling facility will ensure that our young players no longer have to wait for winter to practise. They can now train throughout the year, with the flexibility and continuity required to compete at the highest levels,” Saxena stated during the inauguration. He expressed confidence that this sustained training environment would elevate the skill levels of Ladakhi players, enabling them to achieve higher levels of competition and represent India on international platforms.
The Lieutenant Governor further noted that the rink would be instrumental in identifying and nurturing new talent from Leh and other areas within Ladakh. The systematic training provided by this facility will equip these emerging athletes for national and international competitions. Beyond its direct impact on competitive sports, the facility is also anticipated to stimulate sports tourism and contribute positively to the local economy, further solidifying Ladakh’s reputation as a premier destination for winter sports.
The inauguration ceremony saw players from local teams participating, marking the beginning of a new era for ice hockey in the region. The development is seen as a major step towards making Ladakh a hub for winter sports, attracting talent and enthusiasts alike.
