A devastating fire tore through a residential building in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday, resulting in six fatalities and seven injuries, according to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
More than 230 fire and EMS personnel responded to the blaze, which erupted shortly before 1:40 a.m. on 58th Street. Firefighters arrived to find the first and second stories of the building fully engulfed in flames, quickly escalating the incident to a three-alarm fire. Heavy smoke and flames billowed from the windows as the fire intensified.
The intensity of the fire led to the collapse of the second floor and staircase, and the blaze also spread to an adjacent building. Firefighters discovered four bodies within the structure. Two individuals who were critically injured were transported to a local hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll to six.
In addition to the fatalities, seven people sustained injuries, including three firefighters. These individuals received treatment for minor to serious injuries. The identities and ages of the victims have not yet been released by authorities.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, hazmat teams were dispatched to the scene after a lithium-ion battery was discovered. FDNY officials noted that these devices are common in homes and that the fire marshal is working to determine if it was the ignition source for the catastrophic fire. This incident follows a similar tragedy in the Bronx just over a week prior, where a 10-year-old died and four family members were hospitalized after an e-scooter battery caught fire inside an apartment.
The fire significantly damaged the two-story home on 58th Street, a thoroughfare known for its working-class residents. The extent of the damage to the neighboring building is still being assessed, and the Red Cross was on site to assist displaced residents.
