In a devastating turn of events, the serene village of Bani in Kathua district witnessed the loss of lives and properties due to heavy rains and landslides. Three individuals have lost their lives, and two more are feared dead after two houses collapsed following the incessant downpour.
The two ill-fated houses, owned by Mushtaq Ahmed and Abdul Qayum, gave way under the relentless assault of heavy rainfall in Surjan Morha Aruad Block. Tragically, five people, including children, were buried alive under the debris of these collapsed structures. The rescue operation, spearheaded by police personnel and local volunteers, managed to retrieve the bodies of three victims. One of the deceased has been identified as Mohammad Arif, the son of Abdul Qayum. However, the grim search for the two others continues, raising concerns for their survival.
The district authorities, led by SSP Kathua Shivdeep Singh Jamwal, are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to bring the missing individuals to safety. A massive rescue operation is currently underway, aiming to reach anyone who may still be trapped under the debris.
The unfortunate series of events didn’t stop there, as a landslide claimed the life of Naseema Begum, the wife of Mohammad Rafiq, in Mandhota Tehsil Bani. Her body was later found amidst the rubble, adding to the sorrow that has gripped the region.
Among the casualties was young Ajay Singh, a 7th-grade student and the son of Late Mohiner Singh from Sitti Tehsil. His life was cut short when another landslide struck the area near his residence, leading to his untimely demise.
The dangers of the ongoing heavy rains and landslides continued to loom large over the region. Reports of another individual, Sham Lal, son of Tara Chand from Bhullari Tehsil, being buried due to a landslide have emerged. A search operation is currently underway, with the hopes of finding him alive.
SDM Bani Satish Kumar stated that the area is grappling with flash floods and landslides in multiple locations. In response, rescue teams, comprising both locals and officials, have been promptly deployed to the affected areas to mitigate further loss of life and property.
The district administration and locals are coming together to support the affected families during these trying times. The loss of lives and properties has reminded everyone of the unpredictable and ferocious nature of natural disasters.
