Sikkim: PM Modi to Inaugurate Projects Worth Over ₹4,000 Crore During April Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Sikkim on April 27 and 28, 2026, to inaugurate, launch, and lay the foundation stones for numerous development projects collectively valued at over ₹4,000 crore. The visit is part of the state’s Golden Jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of statehood.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, Prime Minister Modi will arrive in Gangtok on April 27 at approximately 3 PM. The following day, April 28, will see the Prime Minister engage in a series of significant events aimed at bolstering development across various sectors in Sikkim.

The Prime Minister’s itinerary on April 28 begins at 9:30 AM with a visit to the Orchidarium in Gangtok. This center, developed as the Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park, is designed as a state-of-the-art Orchid Experience Centre to showcase the ecological and floral heritage of the state. Later, at around 10 AM, Prime Minister Modi will attend the closing ceremony of Sikkim’s 50th Year of Statehood celebrations at Paljor Stadium. During this ceremony, he will officially dedicate multiple development projects to the nation and address the assembled gathering.

The projects set to be launched or initiated span critical sectors including infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, urban development, environment, tourism, and agriculture. The overarching objective of these initiatives is to accelerate inclusive and holistic development throughout Sikkim.

In the healthcare domain, the foundation stone will be laid for a new 100-bedded Ayurveda Hospital in Yangang, located in the Namchi district. Additionally, a 30-bedded Integrated Sowa Rigpa Hospital is scheduled for inauguration at NIT Deorali, enhancing access to traditional and integrative medicine systems within the state.

The education sector will witness the inauguration of the permanent campus of Sikkim University at Yangang. Other key educational facilities to be opened include the Administrative Block of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence at Chakung, the Helen Lepcha Medical College at Socheygang in Gangtok district, and the Dentam Professional College at Dentam in Gyalshing district. Furthermore, model residential schools at Hee Gyathang, a new Model Degree College at Mangshila in Mangan district, and a monastic hostel-cum-classroom at Boomtar Gumpa in Namchi district will also be inaugurated. The Prime Minister will also launch IT-enabled educational infrastructure projects covering 160 schools across Sikkim.

Connectivity improvements are a significant focus, with the foundation stone being laid for two double-lane steel arch bridges over the River Teesta at Sirwani and Lower Samdong, which will connect Namchi and Gangtok districts. The widening and strengthening of the road from Birdhang to Namchi via Kitchudumra is also set to be inaugurated, aiming to improve inter-district accessibility and facilitate smoother movement of people and goods.

In the power sector, the improvement, upgradation, and revamping of the Transmission and Distribution network in Gangtok will be inaugurated, contributing to a more reliable power supply in the region. Urban development initiatives include the inauguration of the Jan Seva Sachivalaya (Mini Secretariat) at Lumsey and the Civil Service Officers Institute in Gangtok. Housing projects for police personnel and Grade ‘C’ quarters at SAP Pangthang, along with the Sikkim Urban Garib Awas Yojana at Lingding, will also be inaugurated. The foundation stone for Sadhbhav Mandap (Public Utility Centre) at MG Marg will be laid.

Environmental protection efforts will see the foundation stone laid for sewerage system rehabilitation at Singtam town as part of river pollution abatement. The pollution abatement scheme of River Rani Chu through Roro Chu river in Zone III, Gangtok, will also be inaugurated, focusing on improved urban sanitation and sustainable ecosystems.

For tourism and pilgrimage, the redevelopment of the Ridge Precinct in Gangtok, eco-tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure at Dodak in Soreng, and facilities related to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, including those at 18th Mile and Hangu Lake, are among the inaugurations. A Yatri Niwas at Krishna Pranami Mangaldham, Namphing, will also be opened. Additionally, the foundation stone for an Eco-Pilgrimage Complex at Silnon in Gyalshing district will be laid.

The agricultural sector will benefit from the inauguration of the Sikkim IFFCO Processing Plant, which is expected to significantly boost agro-processing and strengthen farmer livelihoods. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate indoor cricket facilities at Mining, Rangpo in Pakyong district to promote youth engagement and sports development.
