The recent departure of two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs from Patiala district, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanaur and Chetan Singh Jouramajra from Samana, is anticipated to significantly influence the political dynamics within the region. While the AAP has expressed confidence that these resignations will not adversely affect the party’s standing, the move introduces a new dimension to the local political equations.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the AAP had achieved a comprehensive victory in the Patiala parliamentary constituency during the previous elections, securing all nine available seats. This success had established the party’s strong foothold in the district.
Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra is recognized for his substantial personal political base and established support within his constituency, having been active in politics for over a decade. The AAP had reportedly begun to anticipate potential shifts within the constituency, initiating preparations by appointing Ranjodh Haddana as the constituency in-charge last year, following indications of Pathanmajra’s divergence from the party high command’s directives. Despite these measures, Pathanmajra is understood to retain a formidable vote bank and a considerable number of supporters, both within and outside the Aam Aadmi Party.
Sources close to Pathanmajra suggest his intention to contest future elections remains firm. A potential move to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would provide him with party backing. However, the prospect of an alliance between the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the BJP could lead to complexities regarding the allocation of the electoral seat. Regardless of these considerations, Pathanmajra’s determination to contest is reportedly unwavering.
In contrast, Chetan Singh Jouramajra’s political trajectory appears more uncertain following his decision to leave the AAP and join the BJP. The AAP had previously marginalized Jouramajra earlier this year, opting to place its confidence in Surjit Singh Rakhra, a former SAD-BJP Cabinet minister, by appointing him as the Samana constituency in-charge. Rakhra has since assumed a prominent role, managing interactions with senior administrative and police officials, overseeing development projects, and approving grants within Samana.
For Jouramajra, maintaining his political relevance hinges on his ability to secure a party ticket for the upcoming polls. Given the political influence of the former minister within the AAP administration, his prospects are closely tied to such endorsements.
A veteran journalist who has closely followed the Samana constituency for more than two decades commented that the AAP’s electoral success in Samana, similar to other constituencies, was largely attributed to a significant support wave during the 2022 polls. Therefore, for Jouramajra to sustain his political career, participation in the elections is crucial, with success being an even more desirable outcome.
Following the resignations of these two prominent leaders, there are indications that a number of other party members may follow suit in the coming weeks. An insider within the Aam Aadmi Party acknowledged that the departure of supporters aligned with the two MLAs is anticipated, noting that some individuals have already left the party. However, the insider emphasized the party’s paramount importance and stated that such internal shifts are not uncommon in political organizations.
The insider also revealed that individuals holding significant positions within the party attempted to persuade Pathanmajra and Jouramajra to remain affiliated and adhere to party directives. However, both MLAs were reportedly resolute in their decision to leave the party.
