SRINAGAR: In response to a viral video depicting students navigating a stream to reach their school in Nandimarg, Kulgam, education officials have taken decisive action. The Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Kulgam, under the direction of the Education Minister, visited the affected area to assess the situation, leading to the temporary relocation of classes to ensure student safety.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that approximately 90 students from the upper reaches of Nandimarg were routinely crossing a flowing stream, as no bridge was available to facilitate their commute. This daily hazard raised significant concerns regarding the well-being of the students attempting to access their education.
Prompted by these safety concerns, authorities have decided to shift Classes 9 and 10 to a recently constructed double-storey school building located in the upper area of Nandimarg. This facility is strategically chosen as it is closer to the residential areas of the majority of the affected students, thereby eliminating the need to cross the dangerous stream.
To maintain the continuity and quality of education for these students, three teachers specializing in different subjects have been deployed to the new school building. This measure will allow students to attend classes without compromising their safety, ensuring that their academic progress is not hindered by the lack of essential infrastructure.
Officials have stated that this interim arrangement is expected to effectively address the immediate issue and allow academic activities to resume smoothly and securely for the students involved. The decision reflects a proactive approach by the Kulgam education department to prioritize the safety of students while ensuring uninterrupted learning.
The viral video had drawn widespread attention to the challenging conditions faced by students in remote areas of the Union Territory. The swift intervention by the Chief Education Officer and the subsequent decision to relocate classes underscore the importance of addressing such infrastructural deficits that pose direct risks to educational accessibility and student welfare.
The new school building, which was recently completed, provides a safer and more accessible alternative for these students. The deployment of specialized teachers is intended to maintain the academic rigor and curriculum coverage for the affected grades during this transition period. The administration has assured that efforts are being made to find a long-term solution to the bridge issue, which remains a critical concern for the local community.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring equitable access to education, particularly in geographically remote and underserved areas within the Union Territory. The focus now shifts to ensuring the sustained safety and educational progress of these students, as well as addressing the broader infrastructural needs of rural schools in Kulgam and similar regions.
