Omar Govt Responds to Outrage Over Gulmarg Fashion Show, Promises Swift Action

Srinagar, March 9 – The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister’s Office on Sunday responded to growing criticism over an alleged “obscene fashion show” in Gulmarg, assuring swift action based on an official inquiry. The controversy, first reported by The Chenab Times, has sparked widespread outrage, particularly due to the event’s timing during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) addressed the issue on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging the public anger. “The shock & anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities & that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities & I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report,” the CMO posted.

The government’s response comes after Kashmir’s chief cleric and Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, strongly condemned the event. In a post on X, he described the fashion show as “outrageous” and questioned how such an act could be allowed in Kashmir’s deeply religious and culturally rich environment.

“Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramzan an obscene fashion show is organised in Gulmarg, pictures & videos from which have gone viral sparking shock and anger among people. How could it be tolerated in the valley known for its sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people? Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir,” Mirwaiz wrote.

The controversy erupted after videos and images from the event, held as part of the Ski & Après Ski 2025 festival, circulated online. The show, organized by designer label Shivan & Narresh, featured models in revealing outfits against the snowy backdrop of Gulmarg, drawing sharp criticism from religious leaders, activists, and locals.

The incident has reignited debates on the regulation of tourism-related events in Kashmir, with many urging authorities to ensure that future events respect the region’s cultural and religious sentiments. As the government awaits the official report, calls for accountability continue to grow.
