Delhi Government Urges Private Sector to Adopt Work-From-Home, Carpooling to Conserve Fuel

The Delhi government has issued an advisory to private companies and organisations, strongly encouraging the adoption of a two-day work-from-home policy, staggered office hours, and the promotion of carpooling and public transport to bolster fuel conservation efforts amidst global uncertainties.

This initiative, aimed at reducing vehicular fuel consumption in the capital, exempts essential service providers, including hospitals, health establishments, and municipal services dealing with electricity, water, and sanitation, from the advisory.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had earlier this week launched the 90-day ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan’ fuel-saving campaign. This campaign mandates a two-day work-from-home arrangement for all Delhi government employees and emphasizes the use of public transport.

During the campaign’s launch, the Chief Minister had stated that the private sector would also be appealed to participate in these fuel-saving initiatives. This appeal aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for prudent expenditure of national resources.

The advisory, released on Sunday by the Delhi labour department, highlighted the imperative to conserve and optimally utilize fuels such as petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas (CNG) in light of the prevailing global economic and political situation.

It was noted that commuting to and from workplaces constitutes a significant portion of the daily vehicular fuel consumption within the National Capital Territory. A substantial reduction in this consumption is deemed achievable through the implementation of work-from-home (WFH) arrangements, a practice that demonstrated its operational viability during previous periods of COVID-19 restrictions and graded response action plan (GRAP) curbs.

The advisory explicitly encourages employers of industrial establishments, factories, shops, and commercial establishments, including those in the Information Technology (IT) and IT Enabled Services (ITES) sectors, to implement a minimum of two days of work-from-home per week. This measure is presented as a direct contribution to national fuel conservation efforts.

Furthermore, the advisory suggested the implementation of staggered working hours to alleviate the pressure of peak-hour vehicular traffic on the city’s roads. Employees are also being urged to opt for public transport, carpooling, or non-motorised modes of commuting.

To further support these objectives, private organizations are advised to transition physical meetings to virtual or online formats to curtail travel expenses. The advisory also recommends minimal use of official vehicles for non-essential journeys and ensuring adequate IT infrastructure to facilitate seamless WFH operations.

The private sector has additionally been urged to make a pledge to reduce the consumption of petrol, diesel, and CNG through conscious commuting choices. The advisory also promotes the purchase of Indian-made products as a means to strengthen the domestic economy.

Employers are requested to sensitize their workforce regarding the national importance of fuel conservation during the current challenging period. They are also encouraged to actively motivate their employees to adopt commuting practices that lead to fuel savings.

Private organizations seeking assistance or requiring clarification on any aspect of the advisory have been directed to contact the labour department. The department stands ready to provide support to facilitate the implementation of these fuel-saving measures.
