Amazon Bedrock Expands Global Reach for OpenAI GPT Models Across Asia Pacific

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has enhanced Amazon Bedrock’s capabilities, enabling broader access to OpenAI’s GPT-6 models through global cross-Region inference. This expansion specifically benefits users in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Taiwan, allowing them to leverage advanced AI models even when local capacity is exceeded.

The Chenab Times has learned that this new functionality ensures that development teams in these regions can seamlessly access the latest OpenAI GPT-6 models, including GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, and GPT-6 Astra, via Amazon Bedrock. Global cross-Region inference routes requests to available AWS Regions, ensuring consistent performance and scalability regardless of local demand fluctuations. This system ensures that billing, quota tracking, AWS CloudTrail, and Amazon CloudWatch remain within the user’s source Region, simplifying management and cost oversight.

Enabling Advanced AI Access Across Asia Pacific

Amazon Bedrock now offers GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna through global cross-Region inference from all five specified AWS Regions. GPT-6 Astra is available through this mechanism from the Asia Pacific (Singapore) Region. This approach is designed to overcome potential throttling issues that can occur when demand surpasses the capacity of a single AWS Region.

The three GPT-6 models offer distinct capabilities. GPT-6 Sol is tailored for complex reasoning and coding tasks, GPT-6 Luna excels at high-volume, repeatable tasks, and GPT-6 Astra handles intricate reasoning, coding, and extensive document processing. All models support text and image input, client-side tool use, and prompt caching, with variations in their reasoning effort parameters.

Accessing these models is achieved by using a global cross-Region inference profile ID in place of a traditional model ID when making API calls. The user’s designated source Region is where the API request originates, and Amazon Bedrock intelligently selects the destination Region for processing.

Technical Implementation and Security

To utilize these models, users must meet certain prerequisites, including an IAM identity with appropriate permissions, activation of their source Region, and an up-to-date AWS SDK or CLI. The system supports access through the Amazon Bedrock Converse API, OpenAI-compatible APIs, and custom coding clients.

Security and permissions are managed through AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies and Service Control Policies (SCPs). IAM policies dictate which roles can invoke specific inference profiles, while SCPs provide organization-wide controls, including Region scoping. The article provides detailed JSON examples for configuring IAM policies to grant access to global cross-Region inference profiles and discusses how SCPs can be structured to accommodate these cross-Region requests while maintaining existing security controls.

Data retention and abuse detection mechanisms are also addressed. For automated offline abuse detection, traffic flagged by classifiers is retained by AWS for up to 30 days in the destination Region. Customers with specific data residency requirements are advised to consult with their AWS account teams and compliance departments.

Quota Management and Monitoring

Quota management for these GPT-6 models on Amazon Bedrock Runtime is based on tokens per minute (TPM), measured against the user’s source Region. Input and cache-write tokens are counted at a 1:1 ratio, while output tokens are weighted at 10 tokens per quota consumed. Users are advised to set their max_tokens parameter close to their expected completions and to monitor quota usage proactively via the Service Quotas console.

Monitoring and logging are centralized within the source Region. Amazon CloudWatch metrics, AWS CloudTrail events, and billing all remain associated with the Region from which the API call was made. CloudTrail records the specific inference Region for each request under additionalEventData.inferenceRegion, providing a clear audit trail. CloudWatch also offers ready-made dashboards for AI/ML observability, breaking down token usage by user, team, and cost center when coding agents are utilized.

The new global cross-Region inference capabilities empower users in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Taiwan to harness the full potential of OpenAI’s GPT-6 models through Amazon Bedrock, enhancing their ability to develop and deploy sophisticated AI applications.
