The government of Jammu and Kashmir has appointed Nodal Officers with the Delimitation Commission at the district level to provide timely information as requested by the panel.
According to a government order, one officer has been nominated in each district, and they have been tasked with receiving representations from stakeholders for submission to the Commission, as well as any other work as assigned by the constitutional body.
On Friday, the Delimitation Commission, led by Justice (retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai, concluded a four-day visit to J&K to get “first-hand” feedback on the process of redrawing constituencies and carving out new ones in the state.
During the four-day visit, the Commission interacted with all political parties and concerned officials, with the exception of the Peoples Democratic Party, which was a coalition partner of the BJP in the previous elected government of the erstwhile J&K, and the Awami National Conference.
The exercise, according to the Commission’s Head Justice (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai, will be transparent and completed in accordance with the law’s requirements.
“As far as the Delimitation Commission is concerned, the various stakeholders have overwhelmed us with their large-scale participation. We have taken note of their suggestions and viewpoints, and we will take them into consideration,” she told reporters in Jammu. “As you know, delimitation is a constitutional mandate exercise, and we have been collectively tasked with the difficult work, which we are confident of completing after following due process as laid out in the law,” she had said, adding, “This is our first visit to the UT, and I assure you that it will not be our last.” We’ll have to return to interact with a larger number of people.”
She described the “consideration process” as a “complex exercise,” adding that the commission “will take all necessary steps to continue its engagement.”
The commission’s head, Justice (retired) Desai, responded to the PDP’s claim that delimitation was already a pre-planned exercise with the final report ready, saying that the exercise will be transparent and that there should be no fears or doubts.
