The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has come under fire from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly unleashing “venomous” reporting against India. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia claimed that the BBC is the “most corrupt” organisation in the world and has a “tainted and black history of working with malice against India”. Bhatia cited the BBC’s past reports, including one which described a terrorist as a “charismatic young militant” and allegedly called Holi a “filthy” festival. He also accused the BBC of having little regard for India’s constitution.
The comments were made at a press conference, which came shortly after the Income Tax Department conducted a survey operation at the BBC’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of a tax evasion investigation. The Congress party, which is in opposition to the BJP, criticised the government’s actions and accused it of being after the BBC while ignoring issues such as the Adani controversy.
Bhatia claimed that the Congress party and other opposition parties are opposed to India’s progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He accused the Congress of supporting “anti-national” forces and of politicising the work of constitutional authorities such as the Supreme Court and the Election Commission.
The BJP’s comments follow the government’s recent decision to block access to a BBC series on the 2002 Gujarat riots. The series has come under fire from the BJP, which claims that it is biased against the party and against India.
The BBC has not yet commented on the allegations made by the BJP. However, the organisation has previously defended its reporting and its commitment to impartiality.
