SRINAGAR: In a significant administrative overhaul, Ladakh has been divided into five new districts, bringing the total number of districts in the Union Territory to seven. The decision, approved by the Lieutenant Governor, comes just days before an anticipated visit by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the creation of these new administrative units aims to decentralize governance, bring public services closer to the populace, and foster accelerated development, particularly in remote and border areas. The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh described the move as historic, emphasizing its alignment with the Prime Minister’s vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh.
The five newly established districts are Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass. Previously, Ladakh comprised only two districts. This expansion is a fulfillment of long-standing demands from residents of these regions, who had cited geographical challenges, extensive travel distances to existing administrative headquarters, and the need for more localized governance as primary reasons for seeking district status.
The approval for these new districts was reportedly given by the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024. Officials stated that the move is expected to strengthen grassroots governance structures, streamline the delivery of public services, and create new opportunities for economic growth, employment, and entrepreneurship across the Union Territory. The decentralization is intended to ensure that administrative functions are more accessible to citizens, especially those residing in far-flung areas.
The creation of new districts is a key administrative reform aimed at improving the efficiency and reach of government services. Residents of the newly formed districts, such as Zanskar and Drass, have long advocated for separate district status due to the logistical difficulties in accessing services from distant district headquarters. The administration anticipates that this restructuring will address these challenges effectively.
