Shimla Gears Up for 5-Day International Summer Festival Featuring Cultural Extravaganza and Novel Joyride

Shimla, the picturesque capital of Himachal Pradesh, is set to host its annual International Summer Festival, a five-day extravaganza commencing on June 8 and concluding on June 12. The festival, a significant event in the region’s tourism calendar, will unfold at prominent locations including The Ridge and The Mall, promising a blend of cultural performances, sporting events, and unique entertainment activities. A notable addition this year will be a helicopter joyride, offering participants a novel aerial perspective of the town.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Anupam Kashyap, the Deputy Commissioner of Shimla, unveiled the festival’s details during a press conference. Mr. Kashyap elaborated on the planned ‘Ride of Seven Hills’, a helicopter joyride designed to provide tourists and local residents with an aerial tour of Shimla’s seven prominent hills. This initiative is a follow-up to the successful launch of heli-taxi services earlier in the year, which connect Shimla to destinations like Reckong Peo, Chandigarh, and Kullu. Discussions are underway with the helicopter service provider to operationalize this new attraction, with the potential for its continuation throughout the year if deemed successful.

The festival is poised to showcase a diverse array of cultural and entertainment offerings. Attendees can anticipate traditional performances such as ‘mahanati’ and ‘Chham’ dance, alongside a presentation by the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts from Dharamshala. The event will also feature an art festival, and various regional folk dances including ‘Choliya’, ‘Ghoomar’, ‘Bhawai’, and ‘Gojri’ dance. A ‘Shimla Grishmotsav-Rang Manch Utsav’ is also scheduled, contributing to the vibrant cultural tapestry of the festival.

Further enriching the festival’s schedule are a dog show, a healthy baby show, a traditional Pahadi fashion show, a women’s food festival, and a flower show. These events aim to cater to a wide range of interests, ensuring an engaging experience for all visitors. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that these activities are curated to offer a memorable experience to attendees, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and local traditions of Himachal Pradesh.

In an effort to promote intellectual engagement and competitive spirit among the youth, an inter-school declamation competition named ‘Shyamala Manthan’ will be organised, with participants presenting their views in both Hindi and English. To champion fitness and sportsmanship while simultaneously raising awareness against drug abuse, an anti-drug (‘anti-chitta’) inter-District volleyball competition has been planned. This sporting event will see participation from teams representing all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, a ‘Voice of Mountain Competition’ is set to take place, with initial auditions being conducted online, offering a platform for budding artists and singers.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of these competitions, serving as an incentive for participation and excellence. The festival will also feature ‘star nights’, where renowned singers and performers will take the stage to entertain the audience, adding a musical dimension to the festivities. These performances are expected to draw significant crowds, further enhancing the festive atmosphere in Shimla.

The International Summer Festival has historically been a cornerstone event for promoting tourism in Himachal Pradesh, attracting visitors from across India and abroad. The inclusion of a helicopter joyride this year signifies an effort to introduce novel attractions and enhance the overall tourist experience in Shimla. The district administration’s focus on a diverse program, encompassing culture, sports, and unique experiences, aims to solidify Shimla’s position as a premier tourist destination.

The festival’s commitment to engaging various segments of the population, from students participating in declamation contests to families attending the dog and flower shows, underscores its inclusive nature. The emphasis on sports, particularly the volleyball competition against drug abuse, reflects a broader social objective embedded within the celebratory event. The logistical arrangements for such a multi-faceted festival are being overseen by the district administration to ensure smooth execution and a positive experience for both participants and spectators.

The planning involves coordination between various government departments and local stakeholders to manage crowds, ensure security, and maintain the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of the festival venues. The successful organization of such events is crucial for the local economy, providing a boost to hospitality services and local businesses. The International Summer Festival in Shimla is anticipated to be a highlight of the summer season, offering a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity.
