A significant fire broke out in an ethanol storage tank at the BCL Industries Limited distillery unit in Machhana village, located on the Bathinda-Dabwali road in Punjab, on Friday morning. The incident, which occurred around 9 am, led to an intense blaze that quickly engulfed the entire storage tank. Nearby residents reported hearing what sounded like a powerful explosion, with the noise reaching several surrounding villages. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported in the incident.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that upon receiving immediate notification of the fire, the civil administration and police initiated swift action. Senior officials were dispatched to the scene to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts. Initially, the distillery’s internal fire-fighting team, supported by two fire tenders, attempted to bring the situation under control. However, the severity of the fire necessitated the involvement of multiple external agencies.
Assistance was subsequently requested from and provided by the Bathinda Municipal Corporation’s Fire Department, the HMEL refinery located in Rama, the Bhisiana Air Force Station, and several nearby industrial units. In total, approximately 18 fire tenders from various locations were deployed to combat the blaze. After several hours of sustained and intensive firefighting operations, the combined teams were successful in bringing the fire under control.
Senior officials from BCL Industries stated that the precise cause of the fire had not yet been determined. A specialized technical team has been constituted and tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain its origin. The affected ethanol storage tank was reported to have a substantial capacity, capable of holding several lakh litres of the flammable liquid, which presented considerable challenges for the firefighting crews.
Despite the difficulties posed by the large volume of ethanol and the intensity of the fire, the coordinated efforts of the diverse firefighting units were instrumental in preventing the blaze from spreading to other parts of the distillery or to nearby areas. A police officer present at the scene confirmed that there were no casualties but acknowledged that significant financial losses were anticipated. The exact extent of the damage and the definitive cause of the fire are subjects of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has raised questions regarding the safety protocols in place at industrial units handling large quantities of volatile substances like ethanol. Such storage facilities are critical components of the biofuel production chain, contributing to India’s energy diversification efforts. However, their inherent risks necessitate stringent safety measures and regular maintenance to prevent catastrophic events.
The investigation into the fire at the BCL Industries distillery is expected to examine all potential contributing factors, including the condition of the storage tank, operational procedures, and the efficacy of existing safety systems. Authorities will likely review compliance with industrial safety regulations to identify any potential lapses and implement corrective measures to avert future occurrences. The economic impact of the fire, particularly on BCL Industries’ production capacity and supply chain, remains to be fully assessed as the investigation progresses.
