Anantnag Hospital Faces Negligence Allegations After Patient’s Death Post-Surgery

A 35-year-old man from Kulgam district has died at a private hospital in Anantnag, leading his family to allege medical negligence. The deceased, identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, had undergone surgery for kidney stones at Mid City Private Hospital. Doctors at the facility have stated that the death does not appear to be a complication of the surgery itself.

According to hospital officials, Wani was admitted for a Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedure, a minimally invasive surgery for kidney stone removal. The procedure was reportedly successful, and the patient was stable in the initial post-operative period, even managing to walk within the hospital premises on Friday evening. He was prescribed oral medication as part of routine post-operative care.

However, Wani’s condition deteriorated dramatically on Saturday morning. He reportedly collapsed while walking in the hospital ward and could not be revived despite immediate medical intervention. He was subsequently declared dead by the hospital staff.

The sudden and unexpected death of Wani has devastated his family, who have accused the hospital staff of negligence. Relatives have questioned how a patient who appeared stable after surgery could pass away so soon afterwards. The family staged a protest outside the hospital, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.

Police have reached the hospital to investigate the matter. Authorities are reportedly examining medical records, treatment details, and statements from hospital representatives to establish the sequence of events. The cause of death remains unclear, and an autopsy report is pending. Police officials are gathering information to determine if any medical negligence contributed to the tragedy.

Hospital administration, through Dr. Zahoor Gilkar, stated that the patient had been fine the previous evening and oral medications had been started. Dr. Gilkar suggested that the collapse might have been due to a sudden medical emergency such as an embolism or myocardial infarction (MI). He emphasized that the patient was stable and otherwise completely fine before the incident, and that the autopsy report would provide further clarity.

This incident has reignited concerns regarding patient safety, monitoring, and accountability within healthcare facilities in the region. While surgical procedures inherently carry risks, allegations of medical negligence necessitate careful reviews of medical history, treatment decisions, and adherence to established healthcare standards.
