Dr. Rakesh Alfred has been appointed the new Headmaster-designate of the prestigious Bishop Cotton School (BCS) in Shimla, a historic all-boys boarding institution. He is scheduled to assume his new role on November 15.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Dr. Alfred, who most recently served as the principal of Delhi Public School (DPS), Patna East, brings a wealth of experience in boarding education, academic development, and extracurricular activities to the 167-year-old school. The BCS Board of Governors has expressed confidence that he will adeptly blend the school’s established traditions with innovative approaches to student development and pedagogy.
Background of Dr. Rakesh Alfred
An English educator by profession, Dr. Alfred’s career in school leadership has spanned several prominent institutions across India. He has led DPS Patna East since the beginning of 2024. Prior to this, he was the head of Neoteric World School in Gwalior from 2022 to 2024, and before that, he served as the head of St Xavier’s High School in Gurugram from 2021 to 2022.
His tenure in boarding education is substantial, having served as the Deputy Headmaster and Chairman of the Games Committee at The Punjab Public School in Nabha from 2017 to 2021. He also spent a significant period, from 2004 to 2017, at Mayo College in Ajmer, where he held the position of Senior Housemaster of Colvin House and was a faculty member in the English department. His earlier career also includes roles at esteemed schools such as Welham Boys’ School in Dehradun, Birla Vidya Mandir in Nainital, and The Chinar School in Alwar.
Focus on Holistic Development
Throughout his career, Dr. Alfred has consistently championed a learning environment that extends beyond traditional classroom settings. He has been instrumental in promoting English language and creative writing programs, fostering engagement in literature, fine arts, and mathematics through festivals and cultural exchanges. His commitment to experiential learning is also evident in his organization of sporting events, including winter trekking and snow camping expeditions, aimed at developing teamwork and resilience among students.
At his previous positions, Dr. Alfred focused on enhancing sports infrastructure, integrating modern technology into teaching methodologies, conducting teacher training programs, and developing student leadership initiatives. At Neoteric World School, for instance, he was involved in establishing a sports academy and introducing Trinity speech and drama training, underscoring his belief in comprehensive student development. The Board of Governors at Bishop Cotton School highlighted his contributions to facilities such as a music studio, a dance studio, and an auditorium specifically for junior students, reflecting his dedication to nurturing diverse talents.
Transition at Bishop Cotton School
Bishop Cotton School, established on July 28, 1859, stands as one of India’s oldest and most respected boarding schools. Dr. Alfred’s appointment marks a transition for the institution, as the outgoing Headmaster, Mathew Prasad John, retires after serving two terms at the school. The Board of Governors has formally acknowledged Mr. John’s contributions and extended its best wishes to him and his wife, Anuradha John, for their retirement.
The Board anticipates that Dr. Alfred’s expertise in academic planning, institutional management, and extracurricular education will be crucial in guiding Bishop Cotton School through its future endeavours. His understanding of the values that the school aims to instill in its students—curiosity, drive, humility, and team spirit—is also cited as a key factor in his selection.
