Pune, Maharashtra: Officials from Yashotej Academy, a coaching institution in Pune, have been booked for negligence in connection with the suicide of a 16-year-old student who was preparing for the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examinations. The First Information Report (FIR) was registered by the Fursungi police following a complaint lodged by the deceased student’s father.
The student, identified as Avdhut Ulhas Bade, a resident of Beed district and an eleventh-grade student, had enrolled in Yashotej Academy on June 15, 2025. He was residing at the academy’s hostel in the Handewadi area of Pune. According to police reports, Bade was accused of stealing Rs 3,000 from his roommate. Subsequently, the hostel warden informed him of potential rustication from the academy.
The incident that precipitated Bade’s alleged suicide occurred last year. The police stated that the minor student became depressed after being informed about the possibility of being expelled from the academy. He was found to have died by suicide in his hostel room on November 10, 2025. Initially, an accidental death report was filed at the Fursungi police station, and an investigation was launched to ascertain the cause of death.
The investigation revealed that the authorities at Yashotej Academy allegedly failed to provide adequate counselling to the student, which is believed to have contributed to his depression and subsequent suicide. The FIR has been registered against the Academy’s director, CEO, and warden under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 106 (causing death by negligence) and Section 3(5). Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
Yashotej Academy offers coaching for both the NDA written examinations and the Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews. The case highlights concerns regarding the mental well-being support systems in place for students in competitive coaching environments.
