Jammu and Kashmir: First Amul Milk Freight Train Arrives from Gujarat

SRINAGAR: In a significant logistical development, the first-ever dedicated freight train carrying Amul milk and dairy products from Gujarat successfully reached the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday. The train, comprising 20 wagons, marks a new chapter in the efficient transportation of essential commodities to the region.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the special consignment departed from the Linch Goods Shed in Ahmedabad Division on April 20. It delivered 10 BCN wagons to the Bari Brahman Goods Shed in Jammu and another 10 wagons to the Anantnag Goods Shed in Kashmir. Each consignment weighed approximately 500 tonnes, collectively transporting a substantial shipment of toned milk, milk powder, buttermilk, lassi, and other dairy items.

Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, described the arrival as a proud and historic moment for the entire Union Territory. He highlighted that this initiative, conceived with the interests of local traders and families as a priority, is expected to ensure the consistent availability of fresh milk across Jammu city and its surrounding districts around the clock. This direct rail service is anticipated to substantially reduce both the cost and transit time compared to traditional road transport methods, thereby generating direct economic benefits for local markets and consumers.

This landmark transportation achievement follows a similar successful rail consignment in October 2025, when 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt reached Anantnag from Gujarat’s Kharaghoda station. Officials indicated that this new initiative underscores the Indian Railways’ commitment to ensuring the delivery of essential goods to remote and strategically important regions. Furthermore, it is expected to foster stronger commercial ties between Gujarat’s robust dairy sector and the markets within the Kashmir Valley.

The introduction of direct rail freight for dairy products is a part of broader efforts to enhance connectivity and streamline the supply chain for essential goods into the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This move is seen as a positive step towards improving the accessibility and affordability of dairy products for the residents of the region. The efficiency gained through rail transport is expected to minimize spoilage and ensure the delivery of fresher products, benefiting both producers and consumers. The railway authorities have expressed optimism that this service will be regularised, further bolstering economic integration between Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir.
