NEW DELHI: A Congress worker, identified as Debdeep Chatterjee, was allegedly murdered in Asansol, West Bengal, amidst post-election violence, prompting strong condemnation from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The party has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating the attack, alleging a “reign of terror” following the polls.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Debdeep Chatterjee, who was closely associated with Asansol North Congress candidate Prasenjit Puitandi, was attacked and beaten, succumbing to his injuries shortly thereafter. The West Bengal Congress alleged that those linked to the TMC were responsible for the fatal assault.
Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, expressed his condolences to Chatterjee’s family and denounced the incident as “utterly reprehensible.” He stated that the politics in West Bengal has devolved into a “reign of terror” by the TMC, characterized by intimidation, attacks, and elimination of opposing voices after votes are cast. Gandhi emphasized the Congress party’s longstanding commitment to non-violence and the Constitution, asserting that despite losing workers, they would continue to uphold these principles.
The former Congress chief demanded the immediate arrest of all guilty individuals, the imposition of the harshest possible punishment, and full security and compensation for Debdeep Chatterjee’s family. “We will not bow before this politics that stains India’s non-violent tradition. Justice will be done,” Gandhi declared.
The West Bengal Congress, through its X handle, highlighted the incident as evidence of a complete collapse of law and order in the state and raised concerns about the safety of opposition workers. The party pointed out that the timing of the violence, occurring immediately after polling, indicated a disturbing pattern of political intimidation and vendetta.
The Congress reiterated its support for the bereaved family and demanded a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the crime, along with adequate compensation and protection. The party also expressed deep concern over reports that an FIR had not been registered at the time of reporting, suggesting administrative apathy.
“Democracy cannot survive in an atmosphere of fear and violence,” the Congress stated, vowing to continue raising its voice against such atrocities and fighting for justice for all victims. The party characterized the murder as a direct attack on democracy and accused the TMC of silencing opposing voices through violence, calling for immediate arrest and stringent punishment for the perpetrators.
