Kulgam Police Bust Major Drug Racket, Arrest Kingpin and Two Associates

Kulgam police have dismantled a significant drug trafficking network with the arrest of three individuals, including a key kingpin identified as Sadiq Hussain, also known as Showki, from Vijaypur, Samba. The operation resulted in the recovery of a substantial quantity of heroin and cash.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that two individuals, Hilal Ahmad Ganai, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Ganai from Kanispora, Baramulla, and Parvaz Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohammad Abdullah Bhat from Wagoora, Baramulla, were allegedly involved in smuggling and selling heroin. Investigations revealed they were transporting the contraband from Banihal towards Qazigund via National Highway-44, intending to distribute it among local youth.

Acting on reliable intelligence, the Qazigund Police Station registered FIR No. 108/2026 under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A checkpoint was established at Choimulla, supervised by Manav Dhanetiya, IPS Probationer and SHO Qazigund. During the naka, the vehicle carrying the two accused was intercepted, leading to the apprehension of Hilal Ahmad Ganai and Parvaz Ahmad Bhat. Approximately 50 grams of heroin-like substance was recovered from their possession, and the vehicle used in the offense was seized.

Further investigation into the backward linkages of the drug supply chain led to the identification of Sadiq Hussain alias Showki, son of Mareed Ali, residing in Rakh Barothian, Vijaypur, Samba, as a major supplier and the kingpin of the operation. Following the issuance of a search warrant by the competent court, a joint operation was conducted by the Qazigund Police and Samba Police at the kingpin’s residence in Samba.

During the search of Sadiq Hussain’s premises, specifically a stable, police recovered 152 grams of heroin and ₹52,000 in cash. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the apprehended kingpin managed a well-organized drug network with a wide client base across Jammu and Kashmir, reportedly supplying narcotics on a daily basis and causing considerable harm to society, particularly the youth.

The operation was conducted under the overall supervision of SDPO Qazigund, Mansoor Ayaz (JKPS), and Additional SP NHW, Mumtaz Ali Bhatti (JKPS). The vehicle seized during the operation is also undergoing legal proceedings as per the relevant provisions of the law.

Anayat Ali Chowdhary, SSP Kulgam, appealed to the public, especially the youth, to abstain from drug use and urged parents to remain vigilant about their children’s activities. He encouraged citizens to share any information related to drug trafficking with the police, assuring confidentiality for informers and warning that stringent legal action would be taken against those involved in such illicit activities.

The successful operation has been attributed to the courage, coordination, and dedication displayed by the Kulgam Police. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking within the region.
