Ludhiana Cremation Ground Looted: Girders, Silver Vessel Stolen by Masked Thieves

Ludhiana, Punjab – Thieves have targeted a cremation ground in Ludhiana, making off with heavy iron girders used for funeral pyres and a silver vessel. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, has raised concerns about security at public facilities.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the perpetrators, numbering four and identified by CCTV footage, were disguised with masks and dark clothing. They entered the Machhiwara Sahib cremation ground and proceeded to uproot substantial iron girders, each weighing approximately 150 kilograms. These girders are crucial for supporting bodies during cremation rituals.

Detailed Account of the Theft

Nand Kishore, the president of the Durga Shakti Committee, detailed the stolen items. In addition to the heavy iron girders, the thieves also took a brass Sheshnag idol and a silver vessel. The committee members reported that the suspects even attempted to steal the battery from a vehicle used for transporting bodies to the cremation ground, but were unsuccessful in this endeavor.

This is not the first time the cremation ground has been targeted. Committee members recalled that the same temple within the premises had previously been vandalized, with brass taps being stolen. This pattern suggests a recurring problem of theft and vandalism affecting the site.

Police Investigation Underway

Local police are investigating the incident and suspect that the thieves utilized a vehicle to transport the stolen heavy iron girders and other items. Machhiwara Station House Officer (SHO) Pavittar Singh confirmed that a formal complaint has been registered, and an investigation has been launched to apprehend the culprits. The CCTV footage is being reviewed to aid in identifying the suspects.

The theft from a cremation ground highlights a concerning trend of disrespect towards sacred and public spaces. Security measures at such locations are often minimal, making them vulnerable to criminal activity. The incident prompts a re-evaluation of the safety protocols at public utility sites across the region.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation. The recovery of the stolen items and the apprehension of those responsible are considered a priority by the local law enforcement agencies. The loss of the girders, essential for conducting funeral rites, poses an immediate challenge for the community relying on the Machhiwara Sahib cremation ground.

The Durga Shakti Committee has expressed its dismay over the incident and is cooperating fully with the police. They are also considering implementing additional security measures to prevent future occurrences. The community hopes for a swift resolution to the case and the restoration of a sense of security at the cremation ground.
