A nurse and her assistant have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the death of an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker who was undergoing childbirth procedures at an unregistered hospital. The main accused, the operator of the facility, remains at large and a reward has been announced for information leading to his capture.
Nurse and Assistant Detained in Kon Hospital Death Case
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the arrests were made on Monday in the Kon area, following the death of Seema Devi, 36, a resident of Bagesoti village. Devi was admitted to the Global Hospital and Surgical Centre for delivery on Friday. Despite a successful birth of a baby boy, she passed away on Saturday, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her demise.
The Superintendent of Police had previously announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for the arrest of Nurse Salma, who has now been taken into custody. Her assistant, identified as Jaurun, has also been apprehended by the police. These arrests come as authorities intensify efforts to uncover the truth behind the ASHA worker’s death at the unlicensed medical facility.
Circle Officer Amit Kumar stated that the primary accused, Naseem Ahmad, the proprietor of the Global Hospital and Surgical Centre, is currently absconding. The police have placed a reward of Rs 25,000 on Ahmad, urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to his arrest. The investigation aims to bring all individuals involved in the operation of the illegal hospital and the subsequent death to justice.
According to Kon Station House Officer Akhilesh Kumar Mishra, an First Information Report (FIR) was registered based on a complaint filed by the deceased woman’s husband. The FIR names Naseem Ahmad and others as accused. The SHO detailed that Seema Devi was initially taken to the Kachnarwa Primary Health Centre and was subsequently referred to the Kon Community Health Centre.
Family members of the deceased have alleged that despite the referral to the government health facility, the ambulance personnel, who were provided by the 108 emergency service, did not transport her to the CHC. Instead, they purportedly took her to the unregistered Global Hospital and Surgical Centre, where the critical delivery was performed.
District Magistrate Charchit Gaur confirmed that an inquiry into the death at the illegally operated hospital has been ordered. He indicated that preliminary findings suggest the patient was referred from the Primary Health Centre to the Community Health Centre in Kon but was allegedly diverted by ambulance staff to the private, unregistered facility. The District Magistrate added that the doctor associated with the hospital reportedly fled the premises after the woman’s death.
The body of Seema Devi has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The Global Hospital and Surgical Centre has been sealed by the authorities as part of the ongoing investigation. Legal action is proceeding against the accused hospital operator and others involved.
In response to the incident, Samajwadi Party national secretary and former MLA Avinash Kushwaha has voiced strong criticism of private healthcare facilities in the region. Kushwaha alleged that some private hospitals have become “centres of death” and accused the health department of negligence and failure to curb irregularities. He claimed that a pattern of deaths in private hospitals across the district is not being adequately addressed by the authorities.
Kushwaha has submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, demanding a comprehensive investigation into private hospitals. He also called for strict action against those found responsible for illegal surgeries and patient deaths, along with accountability for officials within the health department who may have failed in their oversight duties. The demands underscore concerns about patient safety and regulatory enforcement in the state’s private healthcare sector.
