Six Nations Impose Sanctions Targeting Israeli Settler Networks Amid Violence Concerns

A coalition of six countries has announced coordinated sanctions targeting individuals and entities involved in financing and enabling settler violence in the occupied West Bank. The nations include the United Kingdom, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Norway.

These measures are a response to what the countries describe as record settlement expansion and rising settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. The sanctions aim to disrupt the financial flows that have allowed extremist settler groups to operate with perceived impunity. The coordinated action was announced on Tuesday, with Australia and New Zealand having implemented similar measures in the preceding week.

The United Kingdom’s sanctions include measures against six entities and one individual accused of financing, enabling, or carrying out settler violence. Among the designated entities are The Farms Association, which allegedly provides financial and organizational support to settler farms and outposts, and Ahavat Gilad, which is said to channel donations to these outposts. Ari Yshag, accused of fundraising for outposts associated with violence and intimidation, is also on the list, along with Artzenu and Shivat Zion Lerigvey Admata, reportedly involved in financing and resourcing settler farms and outposts.

France has taken additional national measures, including barring Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, along with three leaders of settler organizations and 21 violent settlers, from entering its territory. These actions underscore the international community’s growing concerns over the persistent violence and human rights abuses against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank.

The participating countries have stated that settlement expansion and associated violence are illegal under international law and pose a fundamental threat to the viability of a two-state solution, as well as to long-term peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. They have called on the Israeli government to take urgent action to end settler violence, ensure accountability for perpetrators, and cease extremist rhetoric and expansionist policies.

The sanctions imposed will result in asset freezes, travel bans, and director disqualifications for the designated individuals and entities. The British government has also updated its official overseas business guidance to explicitly advise businesses against engaging in economic and financial activity within illegal settlements.

This round of sanctions builds upon previous measures taken by some of these nations, which have previously targeted Israeli ministers and entities involved in settlement activities. The international community’s stance is that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal and a significant obstacle to peace. The move by these six nations signals an escalation of international pressure on Israel regarding its policies in the West Bank and the ongoing issue of settler violence.
