Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – The picturesque hill station of Shimla is currently facing severe traffic congestion, with an overwhelming surge in tourist vehicles causing significant disruptions to daily life and commuting.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that over 12 lakh kilometers of road space within the state capital has been effectively consumed by heavy traffic, leading to prolonged jams and considerable inconvenience for residents and visitors alike.
Official figures from the Shimla police reveal a staggering number of vehicles entering the town. In May, approximately 8.5 lakh vehicles passed through the three main entry points of Shogi, Totu, and Dhalli. The influx continued into June, with around 3.8 lakh vehicles entering the town thus far. This substantial vehicular movement has resulted in main entry points becoming severely congested, particularly during peak hours, with vehicles moving at a crawl.
To mitigate the chaos, the Shimla police have implemented a comprehensive traffic management strategy. The Shimla Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Singh, stated that around 210 police personnel and home guards have been deployed across critical points in the town. Additionally, a request has been made to the police headquarters to retain three reserve contingents, totaling approximately 70 personnel, who were initially deployed for the Summer Festival. The efforts are further bolstered by the engagement of 50 traffic volunteers and 32 traffic bike riders who are positioned at various locations to provide rapid response to traffic-related incidents.
The district police have organized the town into five distinct sectors for more effective traffic management. Each sector has been assigned to a gazetted officer whose primary duty is to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted flow of traffic. This decentralized approach aims to improve oversight and response times in different parts of the city.
Moreover, specialized police personnel have been stationed at major parking facilities throughout Shimla. Their role is crucial in ensuring the seamless entry and exit of vehicles from parking areas, thereby preventing unnecessary congestion and blockages that can spill onto the main roads and exacerbate traffic jams within the town.
Police are actively encouraging both tourists and local residents to utilize alternative routes to optimize their travel time and alleviate pressure on the main thoroughfares. Commuters heading towards popular destinations like Kufri, Narkanda, Theog, and Kinnaur are being advised to use the Shoghi-Mehli bypass. Currently, an estimated 800 vehicles are being successfully diverted to this route on a daily basis, easing the load on the primary road network.
In an effort to enhance public awareness, the police are utilizing social media platforms to disseminate traffic updates through educational videos. These initiatives aim to provide timely information to tourists and locals, enabling them to plan their journeys more effectively. The authorities are also promoting the use of public transportation, which has been granted operational access on Cart Road. This measure is intended to reduce the reliance on private vehicles, consequently easing congestion on the roads.
The unprecedented volume of vehicles underscores the immense popularity of Shimla as a tourist destination, particularly during the summer months. However, the current infrastructure is evidently strained by the sheer number of vehicles, leading to a critical need for sustainable solutions that balance tourism with the quality of life for residents.
