An eighth-class student in Andhra Pradesh collapsed after allegedly being made to perform sit-ups as punishment by a Physical Education Teacher (PET). The incident occurred at Velpucharla Zilla Parishad High School in Musunuru mandal, Eluru district, on Thursday.
The student reported that the PET, identified as Venkateswara Rao, ordered her to complete 25 sit-ups as a penalty for not wearing the required school shoes. Following the exercise, the student reportedly fainted.
The Education Department officials have been notified and have initiated an inquiry into the matter. The department is investigating the alleged corporal punishment and its impact on the student’s health.
This incident brings to light concerns regarding disciplinary measures in educational institutions and the potential for harm when physical punishments are administered. While specific details of the ongoing inquiry are not yet public, authorities are expected to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the event and determine appropriate action.
